Sean Payton couldn’t resist taking a shot at the Atlanta Falcons  or their fans.

With the Denver Broncos holding a commanding 24-0 halftime lead over Atlanta in Friday night’s preseason opener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Payton delivered one of the night’s most memorable lines when asked about his success against the Falcons.

“There’s a lot of people dressed up as empty seats today,” Payton said during his halftime interview, according to multiple reports.

The comment added insult to what had already been a miserable first half for the Falcons.

Falcons fans boo their team

Atlanta’s home crowd made its frustration clear as the teams headed toward the locker room, showering the Falcons with boos following a first half dominated by Denver. The Broncos scored 17 points in the second quarter and carried a 24-point advantage into halftime.

Payton’s jab carried additional weight because of his long history with Atlanta.

Before taking over the Broncos, Payton spent 15 seasons as head coach of the New Orleans Saints, developing one of the NFL’s fiercest rivalries with the Falcons. He went 21-9 against Atlanta while coaching New Orleans, making his latest dig familiar territory for Falcons fans.

The Falcons gave their supporters little to cheer about early Friday.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, making his Atlanta debut after signing with the franchise during the offseason, started the game as Michael Penix Jr. continues his recovery from a torn ACL. Tagovailoa entered the preseason competing for the starting job in Atlanta’s new-look offense under coach Kevin Stefanski.

Things didn’t improve after Tagovailoa exited. Cooper Rush struggled, and Denver defensive back Jahdae Barron delivered the biggest blow of the first half by returning an interception 97 yards for a touchdown.

For Atlanta, the preseason opener was supposed to provide an early glimpse at a fresh start.

Instead, the Falcons walked into the locker room hearing boos from their own fans — while one of their longtime rivals delivered the punchline.

Payton didn’t need many words.

The scoreboard  and the empty seats  did most of the talking.
