Good morning, baseball fans!
It’s time to check in on the San Francisco Firebells, who (as of the time this is being written) currently lead the Women’s Professional Baseball League with a 5-2 record!
Here’s a rundown of how they’ve done since our last update:
First up, they were defeated 12-3 by the Los Angeles Queens on Friday, August 7th. We, uh, don’t need to get into detail on that one.
However, they turned it around the next day and defeated the Queens 10-3! Joely Leguizamon led the team on offense, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Andreanne Leblanc (1B) and Jill Albayati (P/3B) each had two RBI as well, and Kelsie Whitmore went 2-for-4 and scored two runs as well.
They went on to do it again on Wednesday, August 12th, defeating the Queens 8-2. Kelsie Whitmore (CF) was the star of the show, going 3-for-4 with six RBI, and yes I buried the lead because she also hit THREE HOME RUNS!! Cementing her legacy as the first major slugger of the WPBL and proving why she was an excellent first pick by the Firebells! Jua Park (2B) went 2-for-3 as well, scoring two runs and knocking in another.
The beatings continued on Friday, August 14th, where the Firebells once again defeated the Queens, this time 17-3! Whitmore (pitching for this game) shined once again, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and scoring three runs. Amanda Gianelloni (2B) scored four runs (on one hit and a walk), and Alexia Jorge (C) went 3-for-4 with a whopping four RBI and four runs scored of her own.
The winning didn’t stop there (although the Queens finally got a break) as the Firebells defeated the New York Heights 11-6 on Saturday. Whitmore and Albayati proved to be a strong pairing at second and third in the lineup, going for a combined five hits, five RBI, four runs scored and two home runs. Leblanc went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, Leguizamon knocked in two and scored a run herself, and Samantha Gutierrez (C) knocked in three runs as well.
I think it’s safe to say that this team is gelling very well!
