For any sporting event, the broadcast can make or break the entire fan experience. The people in the commentary booth make the action sound more real, break down the game to enhance the experience, and overall emulate a stadium-like atmosphere.

For the San Francisco 49ers, that voice was synonymous with Greg Papa. A veteran of the broadcasting booth, his run was tragically cut short, and now he’s revealed the heartbreaking developments that led to him being laid off.

Greg Papa Narrates Battle With Cancer

A legendary commentary tenure saw him call games for a host of teams, ranging from the NFL to the NBA, and even the MLB. Franchises like the Indiana Pacers, Golden State Warriors, Oakland Athletics, Oakland Raiders, and the San Antonio Spurs all employed him at various points in time.

However, his most recent work as a play-by-play announcer came with the San Francisco 49ers. Becoming their lead radio voice, he shared a stage with Tim Ryan for KNBR 680. Last year, though, was tragic for him.

On August 1, 2025, he announced his cancer diagnosis, taking a break from his broadcasting duties. But speaking to NBC Bay Area legend Raj Mathai this week, he revealed the brutal circumstances surrounding his layoff from KNBR.

“I was fully preparing to return to work. There was never a discussion that that would not be the case. And then one day, you get a phone call, and I thought it was a return-to-work plan.” But it was made worse by the fact that he was cleared to resume work.

“My hematologist cleared me to do that. They went the other way, and they chose to terminate my contract. So I went from terminal to terminated in a short period of time. At a human level, it’s hard to understand that that could be done to you.”

For a new generation of 49ers fans who were enamoured with Papa and his iconic touchdown calls, KNBR’s decision was unacceptable. There was an immediate outcry on social media, with Greg Silver sharing his love for the iconic sportscaster.

“I freaking love this guy, and the coolest part is that I’m just one of so many. ‘GREGCELLENT.'” He wasn’t the only one, though, as others sent heartfelt messages wishing him a speedy recovery.

As one fan wrote, “Damn. I feel horrible for Papa. Fantastic announcer and soul from all accounts. Beat that [expletive], Greg! Love ya.” Another added, “Rooting for Papa.”

For a lot of Bay Area fans, Papa became the voice of their favorite sports team. As one fan encapsulated, “Absolute Bay Area icon. The soundtrack of so many incredible moments… including a few where I really should have been paying attention in Hebrew school (sorry, Rabbi). Hurry back, Greg. You are loved and missed. Can’t wait to hear that touchdown call again soon.”

Very quickly, though, the attention turned to the network, with one fan claiming, “So sad! I spent 20 years in the Bay Area, listening to KNBR. As the father of a leukemia survivor, I’m disgusted by this.” Another fan added, “Shame on you, KNBR.”

With the masses speaking out in his favor, it remains to be seen if it changes the program’s mind going forward. But with the start of the regular season less than a month away, fans will clearly miss his work in the booth if he does not return to his usual spot.
