The controversy surrounding former NFL reporter Dianna Russini and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has taken another turn, with questions extending beyond the two individuals. Focus has now shifted to what The Athletic may have uncovered during its internal ethics review and whether other people could be tied to the controversy.

Now, podcaster Nikki Gist is suggesting the story could involve several other recognizable names.

Nikki Gist Hints at ‘Deep’ Ties in Dianna Russini-Mike Vrabel Scandal

In a recent X post, Last Men Standingco-host Tony Farmer revisited LaVar Arrington’s earlier prediction that investigators could uncover something “too big to release.”

Referring to the delay in making the findings of the investigation public and the media house’s refusal to explain why, Farmer questioned whether The Athletic’s management has indeed run into something bigger.

Gist pushed the conversation into much broader territory.

She suggested investigators may have discovered problems involving people inside the organization, particularly if Russini had informed her editors about the relationship.

“I think part of what they’re finding is that their people weren’t on the up and up,” Gist said.

She then outlined why either scenario could create serious questions for the publication. “If she did tell them and they knew and they swept it under the rug, that’s a problem,” Gist said. “But if they found out through other means, that’s also a problem.”

However, her biggest claim involved the possibility of other prominent figures being connected to the controversy. Gist said the situation was not limited to Russini, adding, “This web is very, very, very deep. There are many, many names, well-known names attached to some of this stuff.”

Gist also alleged that prominent industry figures have attempted to quiet independent commentators covering the story. “There are well-known people reaching out to people like us, saying, shut the [expletive] up.” She insisted that Russini was not the only person involved.

Her allegations remain unverified, and neither Gist nor Farmer provided documentation linking specific NFL coaches, executives, or journalists to the ongoing situation.

The controversy has already had a direct impact on Russini. She resigned from The Athletic on April 14 while the company conducted an internal ethics review. Vrabel, meanwhile, remained the Patriots’ head coach, with the NFL declining to open its own investigation.

As the 2026 NFL season approaches, the delays in official updates from The Athletic continue to leave people guessing about the final outcome of the probe.
