The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' first unofficial depth chart has given SirVocea Dennis the starting nod next to veteran Alex Anzalone. But with the way rookie Josiah Trotter Jr. has performed since the pads came on, the bigger question may be how long Dennis can keep the job. Tampa Bay's initial depth chart lists Dennis ahead of Trotter at inside linebacker, with Anzalone occupying the other starting spot. While that sets the order, it shouldn't be viewed as final, with plenty of preseason football still ahead. Since the Buccaneers put the pads on, the second-round pick has consistently flashed the physicality and speed that made him an intriguing selection at 46th overall. His impact came immediately during Tampa Bay's first padded practice, when he recorded back-to-back tackles for loss, showcasing his downhill mentality and ability to get into the backfield, and he did the same Tuesday against the Jets in joint practice. Trotter also fits the mold of the linebacker Todd Bowles wants in his defense. He's aggressive against the run, has the closing speed to make plays behind the line of scrimmage and possesses the versatility to contribute as a blitzer. The Buccaneers specifically identified those traits when they selected him. Dennis, meanwhile, has the advantage of experience. The former fifth-round pick has been in Tampa Bay's system and knows what Bowles expects from his linebackers. That familiarity matters, especially as the team replaces franchise icon Lavonte David. The Buccaneers aren't necessarily asking Trotter to take over that role immediately, either. But competition changes quickly in training camp. If Trotter continues producing at his current pace once preseason games begin, the Buccaneers may have to shake up the depth chart. Dennis can maintain his position by proving he can consistently execute his assignments, but Trotter's splash plays could make it increasingly difficult to keep him off the field. What happens over the next few weeks could determine who steps on the field when Week 1 arrives.
