When considering the calendar reads August, now is the time to look at rankings of certain players in the doldrums of the NBA offseason. All of the major player movement is done and now is the time for everybody to begin preparing for what's to come in the 2026-27 season. The Philadelphia 76ers expect to be one of the top teams in the league contending for the Larry O'Brien trophy when considering all of the talent they acquired in the offseason. LeBron James and Jaylen Brown join Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and Co. to get the job done in the East, HoopsHype ranked the top 27 point guards in the league right now and Maxey comes in ranked No. 5 on the list:
Electric lead guard Tyrese Maxey is coming off the best season of his career, one in which he earned All-Star honors for the second time and All-NBA Team honors (as a 3rd Teamer) for the first time. According to VORP and BPM, Maxey was roughly a Top 7 player in the NBA last season, and when you look at his raw averages, it’s easy to surmise why. Maxey ranked fifth in points per game last season, 22nd in assists per game and 10th in steals per game, taking the next step in his development in a major way. The former Kentucky standout is lightning-quick, both in the open floor and in the halfcourt, possessing an elite first step, fantastic burst and a tidy crossover, making him a nightmare for foes to defend. Maxey boasts top-notch three-level scoring ability, thanks to both his speed with the ball, which helps him get to the basket and use his athleticism to finish in traffic, and his prowess for pulling up and hitting jumpers off the dribble when opponents sag down to defend the rim.
In the 2025-26 season, Maxey averaged 28.3 points and 6.6 assists as he was a constant leader for the Sixers on a nightly basis. As Philadelphia now moves forward, it will continue to lean on him to be the tone-setter for this group. The new stars will follow Maxey as he enters his seventh season for this group and if he can continue to take these leaps forward, it changes everything for Philadelphia.
