Hull City Close in on Permanent Joe Gelhardt Deal After Promotion Heroics

Hull City are moving closer to completing the permanent signing of Joe Gelhardt from Leeds United, according to Sky Sports, as preparations continue for their return to the Premier League.

It is a deal that carries a certain logic. Gelhardt already knows the club, the dressing room and the expectations awaiting Hull this season. More importantly, Hull already know precisely what they are getting.

Gelhardt Earned Premier League Opportunity

Gelhardt was an important figure during Hull’s promotion campaign last season, scoring 14 league goals before adding another during the play-offs.

For a player whose career had appeared to be searching for direction, the move to Hull proved transformative.

The 24-year-old found regular football, responsibility and an environment in which his qualities could flourish. Hull benefited considerably from that relationship, and their decision to pursue a permanent agreement suggests manager and club alike believe there is considerably more to come.

Sky Sports reports:

Hull City are close to completing a deal to re-sign Joe Gelhardt from Leeds United permanently.

For Hull, continuity carries considerable value as they prepare for Premier League football.

Hull Move Quickly After Promotion

Promoted clubs often face an uncomfortable summer. Players who were good enough to earn promotion suddenly find their positions under scrutiny as recruitment departments search for Premier League experience.

Hull appear willing to reward one of the players responsible for getting them there.

The forward was part of Hull’s promotion-winning campaign last season, and they have moved quickly in recent days to bring him back for their Premier League return.

There is something refreshing about that approach.

Gelhardt does not require an adaptation period. He understands Hull’s system and already possesses relationships with those around him. For a newly promoted club, removing uncertainty wherever possible can be particularly valuable.

Premier League Challenge Awaits Gelhardt

Of course, scoring goals in the Championship provides no guarantee they will arrive with the same frequency in the Premier League.

Gelhardt will face quicker defenders, stronger centre-backs and opponents capable of punishing mistakes far more efficiently.

His record last season nevertheless deserves considerable respect.

The 24-year-old scored 14 league goals for Hull last season and added another in the play-offs as they sealed promotion.

Those numbers help explain Hull’s determination to complete the deal.

At 24, Gelhardt should also be approaching years in which his understanding of the game begins to complement the energy and sharpness that first made him such an intriguing prospect.

For Hull, this feels like sensible squad building. Premier League survival rarely comes from assembling an entirely new team in one summer. Familiarity matters, chemistry matters and players who already understand what the club requires matter enormously.

Gelhardt helped Hull reach the Premier League. He now appears increasingly likely to receive the opportunity to prove he belongs there.

Our View, EPL Index Analysis

From a Hull City perspective, this feels like exactly the sort of deal we should be making after promotion.

Gelhardt earned his chance to play Premier League football with us. Fourteen league goals, plus another in the play-offs, is a serious contribution, and he became an important part of a side that achieved something special last season.

There is also a lot to be said for continuity. We already know what he can do, he understands the manager, the dressing room and the way we want to play. That removes a lot of the uncertainty that normally comes with summer recruitment.

Of course, the Premier League will be a different level. Defenders will be quicker, stronger and more experienced, and Gelhardt will have to prove that he can translate his Championship form into goals at the highest level.

As a Hull supporter, though, I would much rather see us back a player who has already delivered for the club than immediately replace him with someone simply because they have a bigger reputation.

At 24, there should still be development to come as well. He has already shown that he can handle pressure, score important goals and contribute when the stakes are high.

If the fee is sensible, this looks like very good business. Gelhardt helped get Hull back into the Premier League, and he deserves the opportunity to show he belongs there with us.
