The Indiana Fever’s overtime victory over the Atlanta Dream delivered just about everything expected from one of the WNBA’s most heated matchups. The game included a massive comeback, physical play, late drama and another officiating controversy involving Sophie Cunningham. Indiana erased an 18-point deficit to defeat Atlanta 95-91 in overtime Sunday at State Farm Arena. The victory itself should have been the biggest story, but a slow-motion replay of an off-ball exchange between Cunningham and Angel Reese quickly captured attention online.

The video showed Cunningham attempting to establish position near the basket before Reese extended her arms into the Fever guard’s back. Cunningham fell to the floor, but officials did not call a foul.

OutKick shared the replay while describing the sequence as “another Angel Reese foul.”

The contact could be interpreted differently at full speed, especially during a physical battle for rebounding position. The slow-motion angle, however, fueled criticism from fans who believed Reese clearly pushed Cunningham directly in front of an official.

Fever fans question Cunningham’s treatment

One fan argued that the WNBA should be held accountable for inconsistent officiating and accused officials of ignoring contact against certain players.

“Look at the ref just standing there,” another fan wrote. “Sophie Cunningham is not going to get a call. I wonder why? That is a push right in the back in front of the ref.”

Another viewer claimed Reese could have been called for numerous additional fouls during the game, while a separate fan wrote that contact against Cunningham going uncalled was “no surprise.”

The reactions fit into a larger conversation that has surrounded Cunningham throughout the season. The veteran guard plays an aggressive, physical style and rarely avoids confrontations. She also has become one of the Fever’s most visible enforcers, frequently stepping into tense situations involving Caitlin Clark and other teammates.

That reputation can work both ways. Cunningham is willing to initiate contact and make hard plays, which naturally leaves her involved in more physical exchanges. Fever fans nevertheless have argued that her reputation sometimes prevents her from receiving calls when she absorbs contact herself.

Sunday’s replay gave those fans another example to debate.

Indiana gets the result that matters most

The controversial sequence did not prevent Indiana from completing an impressive comeback. The Fever trailed by 18 points before forcing overtime and eventually escaping Atlanta with a four-point victory. Cunningham finished with three points, seven rebounds and one assist on her birthday.

Reese produced a strong all-around performance for the Dream, recording 15 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Her work on the glass was particularly important during a game in which every possession became valuable. The Fever ultimately found enough offense and defensive stops to overcome both Reese’s production and their slow start.

That result matters far more to Indiana’s playoff position than an isolated missed call. The replay still will do little to reduce the tension surrounding games involving the Fever, Reese and Cunningham.

Indiana has played some of the league’s most emotionally charged games this season, and Cunningham often has found herself in the middle of the action. Her confrontational approach has made her popular with Fever fans and unpopular in opposing arenas. Reese brings a similarly relentless style, particularly when fighting for position around the basket. Putting the two players in the same crowded space almost guarantees contact.

Officials chose to let this particular exchange go. After watching it in slow motion, Fever fans made it clear they would have preferred a different decision.
