Somerset County Cricket Club have brought in New Zealand batter Henry Nicholls for six Rothesay County Championship fixtures remaining in the 2026 season. The 34-year-old left-handed top-order batter is set to report to the Cooper Associates County Ground before the four-day clash with Essex, scheduled to get under way on August 20.

Nicholls carries a substantial red-ball record into this assignment. In 60 Tests for New Zealand, he has accumulated 3,358 runs at an average of 39.50, with an unbeaten 200 as his highest score. His overall first-class record across 141 matches reads in excess of 9,000 runs at 42.51, a figure that underlines his reliability across formats and conditions.

Away from Test cricket, Nicholls has turned out in 92 ODIs and 10 T20Is for New Zealand and has also represented Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League. Born November 15, 1991, he has previously played cricket in England, giving him a working familiarity with the conditions he will encounter during the county run-in.

What does Nicholls add to Somerset's batting lineup?

A left-handed top-order batter with a Test best of 200 not out and a first-class average above 42, Nicholls offers Somerset a proven run-scorer for the most demanding phase of the county season. His experience across multiple countries and formats means he is unlikely to be unsettled by the pressures of a title race. Somerset sit in second place in Division One, and will be looking to push for their maiden title

"Henry is a batter of genuine quality and is an excellent addition to the squad. He has played and performed at the very highest level and has a wealth of experience to add to our batting lineup. In addition to being a high-quality performer, his experience and knowledge of the game will certainly be of benefit to our aspiring players. Having previous experience of English domestic cricket is always useful insight, and we very much look forward to his contributions for the remainder of the campaign," Somerset Director of Cricket Andy Hurry said in an official statement

What has Nicholls said about the Somerset opportunity?

Nicholls will be available for all six remaining Championship fixtures, beginning with the Essex match at Taunton. He scored 197 runs in two games in New Zealand's 2-1 Test series win in England, which included a well-made 121 in the second Test at The Oval.

"I’m looking forward to the challenge of trying to help Somerset win their first County Championship title. I’ve played in England before, so I know how much red ball cricket means to the Members and supporters. “As a cricketer, you want to test yourself in different conditions around the world and take on the best players, and this is the perfect opportunity for me to do exactly that and to help contribute to some success for Somerset, and I can’t wait to get going," Nicholls said in the statement.
