Saturday’s retirement of Ozzie Guillén’s No. 13 jersey begs a natural question, as only 12 White Sox players have been so honored, along with the league-wide retirement of Jackie Robinson’s No. 42: Who’s next?.

Saturday’s retirement of Ozzie Guillén’s No. 13 jersey begs a natural question, as only 12 White Sox players have been so honored, along with the league-wide retirement of Jackie Robinson’s No. 42: Who’s next? On the surface there are no blatantly obvious candidates.

Or aren’t there?

Ozzie did not have his No. 13 retired solely for his work on the field, but for a successful tenure as manager that included the 2005 wire-to-wire first place and title season, and perhaps even a bit for his continued association with the franchise as a pre- and postgame analyst.

Is there anyone else you can think of who contributed massively to the White Sox franchise, in ways beyond play on the field?

We chose #77 for Nancy’s rise to prominence for her team-rallying work during the 1977 South Side Hit Men season. But others could be chosen, including an honor of her as “O” for organist, or her number of years at the club’s official organist (41). Only four players, over five seasons, have ever worn No. 77 for the White Sox; 34 players have worn No. 41, but unless MLB demands that Tom Seaver’s number be retired leaguewide, that number won’t be retired anytime soon, either.

The national question this week involved the race for National League MVP, but that’s the other league, and who really cares anyway. Only one of you (looking directly at WIN05) will be pleased with those results.

On to next week!
