Southampton boss Eckert reveals injury doubt and discusses future of star man

Southampton midfielder Caspar Jander is an injury doubt for Sunday’s Championship opener against Watford, boss Tonda Eckert has confirmed.

Jander missed Southampton’s 2-0 victory over Colchester United in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

And Eckert says a late decision will be made on whether the German midfielder is fit enough to feature at St Mary’s.

“We are looking good and strong at the moment,” Eckert said.

“Caspar has been on the pitch today so I think that will be a late decision to see if we want to risk it for the game or push it one week further.”

The Saints boss confirmed he has no other injury concerns ahead of the opening Championship fixture.

Eckert also insisted Taylor Harwood-Bellis remains fully focused on Southampton despite continued speculation over the defender’s future.

The England international has attracted interest following his performances last season, but Eckert says the 23-year-old has shown no signs of being distracted.

“He is exactly the same and he was exactly the same today in training,” the Southampton boss said.

“I think every transfer window brings you those moments and I think it’s not just Taylor, I think there were a few players that have just performed on a very high level last year and I think it’s normal that this just attracts some interest.

“I think also over the next weeks, I think it’s normal that there will be some names popping up every now and then, but what I can say is I see the boys focused,” he added.

“We’ve had a good meeting this morning, prepping for the game, I’ve seen the training session and they look sharp and ready to go.”
