Newcastle United continues to be linked with attacking reinforcements as Matthias Jaissle shapes his squad for the new Premier League season.

One of the Magpies’ previously reported targets, Sporting Lisbon striker Luis Suarez, has resurfaced amid uncertainty in Portugal. Following some worrying developments surrounding his situation in the Iberian club, Portuguese outlet A Bola reports that the Colombian has allegedly expressed a desire for a “change of scenery.”

According to A Bola, in a report confirmed by The Sun’s Ekrem Konur, that situation has ”reached the international transfer market,“ where clubs are now paying close attention to the 28-year-old’s availability. Newcastle is specifically mentioned among the teams previously linked with Suarez, alongside interest from Saudi Arabia.

Sporting, however, does not currently appear willing to facilitate an exit. The Portuguese club’s management remains intent on keeping Suarez for now, according to A Bola, with the striker protected by a contract running through 2030 and an €80 million (£69.2 million) release clause.

That represents a potentially significant obstacle for Newcastle should the club revive its interest before the transfer deadline, as Record has confirmed Sporting won’t let Luis Suarez go for fewer than that sum.

The Magpies were linked with Suarez earlier this year, when Football Insider reported mid-May that Newcastle was a “huge admirer” of the Colombia international and possessed the financial strength necessary to pursue him, which has only multiplied now with the sales of Bruno, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon.

Would Suarez be worth paying Sporting’s release clause for the player, or should Newcastle simply move on and concentrate on a cheaper attacking target? Let us know in the comments section below.
