Sporting News ranks 1995 Nebraska as top team ever

Sporting News released its ranking of the 20 greatest college football teams since 1886 on Wednesday. Nebraska made the list twice, with its 1995 group being declared the greatest team since 1886. All 20 teams on Sporting News 140 greatest teams list won the national championship and finished undefeated. The rankings were determined by a 20-voter panel, compiled of Sporting News staff members and college-football writers, broadcasters and podcasters. A total of 73 schools received at least one vote. Nebraska's 1995 team received 369 total votes to earn the top spot, but only seven first-place votes. The 2001 Miami team also picked up seven first-place votes, but only 317 total votes. The 1995 Nebraska team was also the only school that appeared on all 20 ballots in our panel. Sporting News emphasized the '95 Huskers' dominance en route to a second-straight national championship. Nebraska averaged 52.4 points per game in 1995. The Huskers won every game by 14 points or more and averaged 399.8 rushing yards per game and seven yards per carry. Nebraska had seven players rush for at least 300 yards on the season, while its defense allowed just 13.6 points per game. The Huskers featured All-Americans Tommie Frazier, Aaron Graham and Jared Tomich, as well as other notable players such as Ahman Green, Lawrence Phillips and Grant Wistrom. Nebraska's 1971 team also made the list, ranking sixth with 204 votes and one first-place vote. The 1971 team also won its second straight title that season, following its first-ever title the year before. The team averaged 39.1 points per game and allowed just 8.2 points per game. Sporting News 140 noted the team's combination of star power with All-Americans such as Rich Glover, Willie Harper, Larry Jacobson and Johnny Rodgers.
