A successful soccer player can come in all shapes and sizes, with the game largely focused on speed, technique, and tactical ability instead of the force or power required by other sports. However, an imposing talent can sometimes shift the balance in crucial moments, especially if he or she also happens to possess the aforementioned attributes. The towering Neil Pierre is an intriguing prospect who has exploded in recent weeks with standout performances in Major League Soccer. The 18-year-old Philadelphia Union centre-back has quickly established himself as a starter and appears to be nigh unstoppable in the air, making him an asset on set pieces.

Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Pierre joined the Philadelphia Union academy (originally as a striker), praised as a player who “can handle pressure and remain composed while isolated” while winning the 2023 and 2024 Generation adidas Cups and being named to the Best XI. He began seeing time with the reserve team in 2023, making seven MLS NEXT Pro appearances and scoring two goals while being included in the MLS NEXT All-Star Game. During the following season, the centre-back featured in 26 matches and was named MLS NEXT Pro Defender of the Year as his side fell in the championship final to North Texas SC, 3-2. In addition to training with Borussia Mönchengladbach and Real Sociedad, there were reports of interest from other Premier League and La Liga clubs.

“You look at Neil and it’s easy to forget he just turned 16 because he towers above everybody,” said former Union II coach Marlon LeBlanc. “He’s still very, very young. He’s incredibly talented. He has a profile for a center back, and at such a young age to bring him in and have him experience the success he’s had has been fantastic.”

Prior to last season, the Union signed him to a Homegrown contract through 2028 with the option for 2029, with the intent of spending the entire year with the reserves for a methodical growth process, touting his “combination of size, speed, and defensive strength.” However, Pierre inked multiple short-term loans throughout the schedule, was included on the bench several times, and made his senior debut with a 20-minute substitute appearance in a 7-0 demolition delivered by the Vancouver Whitecaps. The majority of his time was spent in MLS NEXT Pro, featuring in 23 fixtures and racking up four goals as the team reached the playoff semifinal.

In January, Pierre was sent on loan to Lyngby for the second half of the second-tier Danish 1st Division season, with the side endeavoring to “work together to get his breakthrough” and “sharpen his qualities further by entering into the competitive situation.” Becoming an “audience favorite,” he made 10 appearances and scored four goals, helping De kongeblå (the Royal Blues) secure promotion to the first tier. Amidst this stint abroad, rumors of interest from Barcelona, as well as hopes of an extension to the temporary deal, rumbled.

The brief spell proved Lyngby to be the right environment both on and off the field. “[A teammate] just said I’d love this in Denmark, especially Copenhagen,” Pierre told Tipsbladet. “And so far he’s been absolutely right. In Denmark, the cakes are amazing. I have to be careful not to eat too many. The people are also very welcoming and nice. And then there’s the bikes … I don’t get it, but at least it helps keep me fit.”

Upon returning stateside and following the World Cup break, Pierre quickly entered into the rotation and then the starting lineup for the Union, becoming a sensation for the struggling side in a mere few appearances. In his first match, his insurance header iced a 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls. Ten days later, another aerial finish tied proceedings in the 96th minute on the way to a 3-2 win against Atlanta United.

At the international level, Pierre is eligible for the United States by birth and Haiti through his parents, receiving camp invitations to the latter. He has appeared for the former program in the Under-15, Under-16, and Under-18 age groups. His most recent duty came with the Under-19 team in June, a camp that ended with a 5-2 friendly victory over Japan.

Standing at six feet, seven inches tall (and still growing), Pierre is an imposing centre-back and occasional fullback who can easily claim headers over opponents and makes an impact in the final third with astonishing leaping and significant speed. He has “an ability to pass the ball through lines, dribble when [he] has to, and make a hard challenge” that enable him to “check a lot of boxes.” His overwhelming strength can be quite impactful in one-on-one situations, with opponents describing him as “not nice to face” due to his “wild physique” and “long legs [that] reach a lot.”

“He was 100% something very special – an athletic splendid specimen,” said Lyngby co-manager Andreas Bjelland. “He could run absurdly fast and jump eight feet into the air. His timing was absolutely amazing and he has a huge advantage on many things. Then there are some other things on the ball that were not his strength and where he will build on … He can be good. If he gets into an environment where he gets to play, it can be really good. He should not sit on the bench for too long, because then it can quickly cost something.”

Pierre may be hard to miss on the field due to his height, but he has already proven himself as a difference-maker in multiple leagues. While the centre-back position is typically the domain of veterans, this particular teenager can influence the match in both phases of the game and should continue to wield his dominance in the air. A player of his quality might skip past the Under-20 international level and move right into the senior squad.
