Stanford's Charlie Bates has shown off his versatility on The Farm, playing predominantly center field as a freshman before his season was cut short. As a sophomore, he moved into the infield, splitting time between shortstop and second base, two positions he continued playing in the Cape Cod League this summer.  Bates played 53 games for the Cardinal in 2026, batting .272 with a .391 OBP, nine home runs, 34 RBI, 10 steals (14 attempts), and an .856 OPS. He hit for nearly an identical batting average as a freshman, but his power improved, his on-base percentage increased by 71 points, and his OPS went up by 121 points.  He was taking the correct steps forward to put himself on the national map ahead of his draft-eligible junior season in 2027. Baseball America has him ranked as the No. 29 college draft prospect for next year, meaning he will likely be a second-round pick if that ranking holds, given that high school players can also be selected.  Baseball America has also been impressed with his work in the Cape, ranking him No. 13 among the League's prospects this summer in a competitive league.  "Despite the up-and-down results, Bates impressed scouts with a nice blend of tools, including above-average power, plus speed, the ability to play multiple up-the-middle positions and a chance for an average hit tool," Baseball America wrote.  The publication also mentioned that he has a chance during the 2027 campaign to solidify himself as a first-round selection. Malcolm Moore in 2024 was the last Stanford Cardinal selected in the first round, going to the Texas Rangers with the 30th overall pick.  In the Cape, Bates ended up hitting .241 with a .328 OBP and a .717 OPS, adding two homers and eight RBI in 30 games.  One potential red flag to keep an eye on for 2027 will be his strikeout rate. As a freshman in 2025, he struck out at a 19.6% clip, and that went down to 14.8% in 2026. Yet in the Cape, he struck out 30.4% of the time, while his in-season walk rate of 13.2% has dropped to 10.4% this summer.  The Cape is a wood bat league, so what impact, if any, that has had on Bates could end up being a determining factor in his draft position next summer.  When the 2027 campaign begins, Bates will rejoin Teddy Tokheim — another potential first-rounder — along with a strong class of incoming freshman recruits as Stanford looks to snap its College World Series drought that has lasted the past three seasons.
