India will begin a two-match Test series in Sri Lanka on August 15, 2026, with the team looking to make a strong start to the new Test season. The series carries significant importance for India's World Test Championship qualification hopes, as the team must win seven of the remaining nine Tests to reach the WTC Final following a loss in the South Africa series last year.

Sunil Gavaskar, the 77-year-old cricket legend, has outlined a clear message for the Indian team ahead of the series. Gavaskar stressed that winning both Tests in Sri Lanka would provide the necessary momentum for India's WTC Final qualification bid.

"The two-match series in Sri Lanka won’t be easy, as Sri Lanka at home are a formidable team. Winning both these Tests would be a good start to the new Test season, as well as give the team the impetus it needs to qualify for the WTC Final," Gavaskar was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Why winning both Tests in Sri Lanka matters for India

Sri Lanka presents a challenging home environment for visiting teams, and Gavaskar's emphasis on the importance of both victories reflects the narrow margin for error in India's WTC qualification campaign. The team's preparation in Sri Lanka has shown promise, with India winning a practice match against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI by six wickets, during which Devdutt Padikkal scored an unbeaten century. However, the team will be without Jasprit Bumrah in the bowling attack for the series.

Gavaskar's message on collective priority over individual stardom

"To be able to do so requires loads of effort and also some luck, but, above all, the belief that Indian cricket should be the priority and not any individual, however big a name he may be," Gavaskar continued.

This philosophy aligns closely with the approach of current head coach Gautam Gambhir, who opposes superstar culture and advocates for the entire team to be acknowledged rather than individual players. Gavaskar's message reflects a broader vision for Indian cricket that prioritises collective strength and team success over personal achievement.

The IPL model and Indian cricket's broader influence

The Indian Premier League has demonstrated the value of well-organised tournament structures and professional cricket management. Gavaskar highlighted how the IPL's success has inspired Indian franchise owners to expand their influence internationally and strengthen cricketing ecosystems in other countries.

"Today, the IPL has shown the world what a well-organised tournament can do. The fruits of that success have spurred Indian franchise owners to venture into other countries and lift those countries’ cricketing ecosystems to a higher level than might otherwise have been possible," Gavaskar concluded.
