This Thursday, we travel to Hällevik in southern Sweden to face one of Scandinavia's most fascinating sides: Mjällby AIF. What exactly is behind this club from the Listerlandet peninsula? We've analysed our upcoming opponents for you.
The greatest story in Allsvenskan history
Mjällby AIF hail from the tranquil fishing village of Hällevik, with just around 1,500 inhabitants. By winning the Swedish championship in 2025, the club achieved one of the biggest upsets in European football history, beating significantly wealthier competitors from the metropolises of Stockholm and Malmö. Now, the club is embarking on its first-ever European Cup campaign!
History: yo-yoing, a decline and a resurrection
Mjällby Allmänna Idrottsförening (or, in English, Mjällby General Sports Club) was founded in 1939 through the merger of the two local clubs, Listers IF and Hälleviks IF. For decades, the club worked its way up from the depths of Swedish amateur football before finally reaching the top division in 1980. Subsequently, however, the club acquired a reputation as a yo-yo club.
After two consecutive relegations, Mjällby even found itself in the third division in 2016. Then came the dramatic turnaround: through consistent regional youth development, the club achieved a meteoric rise back to the top flight at the end of the 2010s, culminating in the greatest triumph in its history.
Strandvallen home: UEFA standards with containers
The Strandvallen Stadium is picturesquely situated directly on the Baltic coast. To meet UEFA's guidelines, it was has gained several containers, TV studios, and mobile extensions. It definitely provides a contrast to the other big stages in European football.
New boss
Following their historic championship title, the club had a change at the top. Anders Torstensson, the 60-year-old architect of this success and long-time championship-winning coach, moved to the position of Technical Director to drive overall strategic development. Karl Marius Aksum was appointed the new head coach for the 2026 season at the beginning of the year.
Captain Jesper Gustavsson embodies the heart and soul of the squad. The midfield strategist is a product of the club's own youth system, having progressed through its youth ranks, and now leads his hometown team onto the European stage as their undisputed leader.

Abdullah Iqbal pulls the strings in defence. With an estimated market value of €3 million, the robust centre-back is the club's most valuable player. Iqbal is also captain of the Pakistani national team and forms the core of the defence.
Rhythm vs. relegation battle
The Swedish Allsvenskan operates on a year-round schedule, meaning the championship is played from spring to late autumn and takes a break during the winter months. Mjällby are therefore currently in full competitive rhythm. However, things are far from going according to plan domestically. After their title win, the team currently sits in 11th place, just above the relegation zone.

However, the Swedes remain unpredictable and are highly motivated by their first-ever European campaign – regardless of whether that ends up in the Europa League or the Conference League.
