A teenager who has spent the summer making history as Jersey's first Commonwealth Games medalist in 36 years delayed opening his A-level results to concentrate on winning another gold medal.

Filip Nowacki finished with a late burst in two minutes 7.70 seconds to edge out Dutch swimmer Caspar Corbeau (2:07.78) to win the men's 200m breaststroke final at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris on Thursday.

The 18-year-old made history for Jersey last month by claiming gold in the 200m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games and won silver in the 100m breaststroke final - finishing ahead of Olympic champion Adam Ramsay-Peaty.

Nowacki took his A-levels in Economics, Mathematics and Physics.

The teenager is competing in the 50m breaststroke at the championships on Friday morning.

Prior to opening his results, the record-breaker said: "As much as I want to know how I have done and hopefully celebrate with my friends, I don't want to risk being distracted whilst in this major competition.

"I know I need to be fully focused so another 24 hours wait I can live with."

Nowacki plans to go to Loughborough University from September as part of their Swimming Performance Centre.

He began swimming in Jersey aged four and joined Millfield School in Somerset for his sixth form studies.

"Millfield are really good at helping you balance commitments, so I haven't had to drop any training sessions like a lot of my peers in club programmes," he said.

"I've done eight sessions a week consistently throughout the exam period and not compromised my studies with the support of my teachers."
