Vinay Kumar has been appointed Karnataka senior men's head coach for the 2026-27 domestic season. The 42-year-old former India pacer, who represented the country in one Test, 31 ODIs and nine T20Is, takes over from Yere Goud, who joined the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru as batting coach. The KSCA managing committee confirmed Vinay's appointment on August 13, 2026.

Vinay brings substantial first-class experience, having played 139 matches and taken 504 wickets at an average of 22.44. He retired from all formats in 2021 and has since worked as a talent scout for Mumbai Indians in the IPL and as a commentator for Star Sports Kannada.

"It's a great feeling to start my domestic cricket coaching journey with Karnataka, where I played most of my cricket and made some great memories," Kumar was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

What Vinay Kumar identifies as Karnataka's missing element

"Talent was never a problem, we have plenty of it. I can vouch for it, having observed both as a coach in Maharaja Trophy and as a scout. What I feel is missing is attitude," Vinay continued.

"For me, it's all about bringing everyone together and trying to work on one goal and achieve it with a bigger picture of the development of cricket in the state," he added.

Vinay Kumar's advantage from scouting and coaching experience

His coaching experience includes leading Hubli Tigers in the Maharaja T20 Trophy and serving as bowling coach for MI Emirates in the ILT20. This is his maiden stint as a domestic head coach.

"That will be the biggest advantage for me because as a scout, I've been watching them very closely for the last 4-5 years. As the Hubli Tigers coach, I got to work with some of them and watch most of the others closely. Also, given my love for Karnataka cricket, I’ve always been connected by watching on television and tracking scores, not just of the senior team, but across age groups. So I know our strengths and also our shortcomings," Vinay said.

Building unity and managing the transition phase

Vinay highlighted the abundance of young talent in the squad and stressed the need to channel their energy and attitude towards a common goal. He also dismissed age as an excuse, pointing to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s rise as an example.

"We have good talent, it is about channelising their energy and attitude towards a common goal. This is a transition phase, but the moment we start talking about it, we might take it a little easier. Players just need to grab opportunities with both hands. There is nothing as a young age anymore, for proof we have Vaibhav Sooryavanshi," Vinay concluded.
