Bangladesh produced a dominant display on Day 2 of the first Test in Darwin, ending the day at 351/6 to establish a commanding 153-run lead over Australia. After dismissing Australia for 198 in the first innings, Bangladesh's batters made the most of favourable conditions, with opener Tanzid Hasan and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto leading the charge.

Tanzid Hasan scripts history with maiden Test century

Tanzid Hasan was the standout performer for Bangladesh as he scored a memorable 101 off 197 balls. The 25-year-old, playing only his second Test match, became the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century on Australian soil. Tanzid showed patience and discipline throughout his innings before reaching the landmark, providing Bangladesh with a strong platform at the top of the order.

Shanto leads from the front

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto continued Bangladesh's impressive batting effort with a crucial 84. He struck seven boundaries and a six during his composed knock before being dismissed by Josh Hazlewood. Shanto's innings ensured Bangladesh maintained their advantage even after the departure of Tanzid.

Mominul Haque also made a valuable contribution but narrowly missed out on a half-century. Resuming his innings from his overnight score, Mominul was dismissed by Hazlewood for 49, falling just one run short of the milestone.

Hazlewood was Australia's most effective bowler alongside Mitchell Starc as the hosts attempted to make a late comeback.

Australia fight back with second new ball

Australia finally managed to put some pressure on Bangladesh late in the day. The introduction of the second new ball triggered a mini-collapse, with Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins taking three wickets for just 11 runs. Starc finished with figures of 2/68, Hazlewood also claimed 2/68, while Cummins took 1/50.

Bangladesh's lower order showed resilience to ensure Australia did not completely seize the momentum. Mehidy Hasan Miraz remained unbeaten on 32, while Hasan Mahmud was 13 not out at stumps. The pair helped Bangladesh safely negotiate the closing stages and ensured the visitors retained a sizeable advantage heading into Day 3.

With a 153-run lead and four wickets still in hand, Bangladesh will look to stretch their advantage further on Day 3 and put Australia under even greater pressure.
