American Samoa, the southernmost United States territory — made up of approximately 45,000 people and located southwest of Hawaii — pulled off what might be the most shocking result in flag football history on Friday during the sport’s World Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Quarterbacked by Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Atlanta Falcons QB Tua Tagovailoa, tossed five touchdown passes, leading American Samoa to a jaw-dropping 38-32 victory over Team USA, a squad that had gone 14 years without a loss in a competitive match. For the first time since 2012, when the Americans took silver behind Austria at the World Championships, Team USA fell short.

Meanwhile, American Samoa — which has fielded fewer than 30 Olympic participants all time and never medaled in the Games — took a major, and undeniably surprising step, toward Olympic qualification.

American Samoa just ended the USA's 14-year run without a loss. 😱

Less than five months earlier, Team USA embarrassed teams led by NFL head coaches and filled with plenty of the game’s recognizable players, both past and present, at Los Angeles’ BMO Stadium, where the first-ever Fanatics Flag Football Classic tournament took place.

Team USA beat Tom Brady's team — piloted by the Denver Broncos’ Sean Payton — 43-16 and Joe Burrow's team — directed by the San Francisco 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan — twice by a combined score of 63-28.

Granted the NFL-laden squads were playing with a few influencers, but those exhibitions still clearly illustrated the current gap between the NFL game and flag a bit more than two years before flag makes its Olympic debut for the 2028 Games in L.A.

And now, in group play at this year’s IFAF Flag Football World Championships, Team USA, the winners of the past five world championships, found itself on the wrong side of the scoreboard against American Samoa.

Taulia Tagovailoa led American Samoa to a historic win, throwing 5 touchdowns along the way. 🚨

Following Friday’s games, American Samoa is atop Group A with a record of 2-1, the same as Team USA’s. American Samoa dropped its final game of the day to previously winless Israel 40-24. Team USA bounced back from its shocking defeat to clobber Australia 40-7.

American Samoa and Team USA have both advanced to the quarterfinals.

This year’s world championships mark the first Olympic qualifying event in flag football. The two-best finishers in the men’s and women’s tournaments will book their tickets to LA28.

That said, the U.S. men and women pre-qualified as hosts, so if their teams place among the top two in either event, the bronze-medal winning squad will get the Olympic nod instead. Six total men’s teams and six total women’s teams will compete in the upcoming Olympics. After the world championship, the remaining three qualification spots, per gender, will be earned at the Olympic Q-Series in June 2028. The teams that obtain LA28 bids via the world championships won’t take part in the Olympic Q-Series.

The IFAF Flag Football World Championships, a biennial event, began on Thursday and will wrap on Sunday. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments consist of 16 teams in Germany this week. Those teams are split up into four groups in each bracket. Group play took on a round-robin format, with each team playing the three others in its group.

The top two teams in each group go on to the quarterfinals. That’s where Team USA will take on undefeated Japan on Saturday. Before that, American Samoa, the unexpected winner of Group A in its world championship debut, will face Canada.
