Tennessee starting safety Edrees Farooq is out for the 2026 season after suffering a knee injury in practice on Aug. 14, UT announced. Edrees Farooq suffered a season-ending torn patellar.

Tennessee starting safety Edrees Farooq is out for the 2026 season after suffering a knee injury in practice on Aug. 14, UT announced.

"Edrees Farooq suffered a season-ending torn patellar tendon in his right knee at practice on Friday morning," UT said in a statement. "We stand with Edrees and support him as he begins the recovery process. We know he will continue to make a strong leadership impact on our team this fall."

Farooq left the practice field in an ambulance and was transported to UT Medical Center. After evaluation, his injury status was updated to season-ending.

It robs the Vols of a returning starter at a critical position in new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles' scheme.

Farooq, a 6-foot, 202-pound junior, was a returning starter and projected to retain that position. Knowles had praised him throughout the offseason. Coincidentally, Knowles recognized Farooq as the defender of the day on his X account about two hours before he suffered the injury.

"Edrees just picked things up quickly and then put himself in position to make plays," Knowles said on Aug. 4. "There’s one thing, getting the scheme. That’s step one. Then, can you function within that scheme and actually make plays? I saw him make a lot of plays this spring that I was happy about."

Farooq's injury is the second to hit UT's secondary in preseason. Cornerback Jadais Richard, a Miami transfer, is out for the season with an upper-body injury suffered in training over the summer.

How Edrees Farooq injury impacts Tennessee defense

Farooq started all 13 games at safety in 2025. He was tied for third on the team with 76 tackles and ranked second with two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.

He also finished the season tied for sixth in the FBS and second in the SEC with four forced fumbles.

As a freshman in 2024, Farooq played all 13 games and made 13 tackles. He led the team with 254 snaps on special teams that season.

Keeping Farooq out of the transfer portal was considered a big victory for the Vols this offseason, especially since they added eight defensive backs from the portal. Knowles liked his hard-hitting style and play-making ability, especially in a scheme that sometimes features three safeties on the field together.

Michigan transfer TJ Metcalf, Penn State transfer Dejuan Lane, sophomore Sidney Walton and sophomore Dylan Lewis are among other top contenders at safety. All-SEC performer Ty Redmond and Auburn transfer Kayin Lee are the frontrunners at cornerback. Kansas State transfer Qua Moss is the projected starter at nickelback.
