NEED TO KNOW

  • Amanda Anisimova had the commentators buzzing about her beverage
  • During her match at the Cincinnati Open, the American tennis star consumed a foamy, amber-colored liquid from a clear cup
  • Eventually, the origin of the beverage was revealed

Amanda Anisimova served up confusion during her Cincinnati Open match on Monday, Aug. 17.

The American tennis star, 24, was seen drinking a foamy, amber-colored beverage during a changeover in the second set against Alex Eala — igniting chatter amongst commentators and fans over the beverage’s bubbles and provenance.

“What is that, Lindsay?” broadcaster Brett Haber asked his partner, former pro tennis star Lindsay Davenport.

“Could it be apple cider, Brett?” she volleyed back.

After Anisimova took a gulp from the clear cup, Haber continued his analysis: “I mean, I would never suggest that a player was drinking a beer in the middle of a match, but ... that’s certainly what it looked like.”

Davenport, 50, interjected that in her years of broadcasting and over 17 years of playing, she had “never seen” a competitor drink a beverage in that manner.

“I mean, it could be non-alcoholic, it could be cider, it could be anything,” Haber added. “We don’t know.”

As the mystery grew, Anisimova fought her way back into the match after dropping the first set, 4-6.

The 2025 Wimbledon and U.S. Open finalist claimed the second set, 6-4, and forced a third, which she won against the Filipino player, 6-2.

In the end, the commentators made their own line-call challenge and determined the drink.

“Just to put a bow on the story, we can confirm, via one of our court-side camera operators, that Anisimova asked for and was delivered a Red Bull,” Haber said, two games into the third set.

He added dramatically: “That is the mystery bevvy.”
