The back line of a defensive unit, a game-changing safety could be the difference in how a defense fairs from its opening week to final game of the year.

Legendary safeties at the pro level like Ed Reed, Brian Dawkins, Ronnie Lott and Sean Taylor all began their careers as standouts at the high school level.

Modern day stars like Kyle Hamilton and Derwin James were some of the highest-ranked prospects in the country when they were in high school. Nowadays, the current group of elite high school safeties are as good as they’ve ever been.

Here's a look at the top 15 safeties in the country heading into the 2026 high school football season.

High School: Waxahachie (TX)

Class: 2027

College Commitment: Texas A&M

Breakdown: Texas A&M has not one, but two of the nation’s top safeties in the 2027 class committed to their program. Snell’s an in-state product leading a Waxahachie team many figure to be in the state title hunt this year.
