With training camp less than a month away, the Red Wings have some glaring holes on the roster that need to be settled. While the team had an obvious need for another top six forward going into the offseason, Dylan Larkin’s trade request essentially tripled that workload.
With Patrick Kane’s departure, even the addition of Viktor Arviddson essentially put the team back at a -1 from where they had left off in late April assuming Larkin does eventually make his departure. The free agent market has essentially dried up as well. With no true general manager at the helm, the Red Wings are locked in a standstill with several roster spots up for grabs.
That could mean some big opportunities for the team’s younger players to win jobs, something that didn’t often happen under Steve Yzerman in the previous regime.
At the moment though, internal improvements and options seem to be the most likely course of action throughout the league. With the NHL world slowing to a crawl three weeks before training camp and preseason begin, even the last crop of college UFA’s didn’t make many waves over the weekend.
Most players either already signed AHL contracts, or teams electing not to re-sign their former draft picks.
With no GM in the chair, the Red Wings are likely to be even quieter than other teams as they try to pin down their top off-ice target. After all, the incoming GM will have a laundry list of expectations and needs, including signing Simon Edvinsson and Alex DeBrincat.
Red Wings Extra
Former Grand Rapids Griffins forward Joe Snively has carved out a nice role for himself in the Swedish Hockey League after making the jump to Europe following his sole season in Grand Rapids. Snively, a Virginia native, played most of his career for the Capitals AHL affiliate Hershey Bears before coming to the Griffins for the 2024-25 season, where he posted 21 goals and 26 assists in 72 games.

Last year, Snively signed a one year contract with Djurgårdens IF in the SHL where he had 39 points in 52 games before the now 30-year-old forward signed an extension with the team in January.
Also on the roster for Djurgårdens is former Red Wings 2019 third round pick Albin Grewe.
In Case You Missed It
Dylan Larkin should plan on wearing a red sweater to training camp next month.
Will Nate Danielson be part of the Larkin solution this year?
