The Portland Trail Blazers will travel to Memphis for consecutive games against the Grizzlies on February 6 and February 8, 2027. For Ja Morant, this will be much bigger than another two-game stretch on Portland’s schedule.

The first game will receive most of the attention. Morant will return to the city where his NBA career began, likely facing boos from fans who once treated him as the future of their franchise. Many outsiders will assume that environment is guaranteed to distract him.

They do not know Morant’s mentality. That crowd could motivate him more than it bothers him, especially if he enters the building prepared to let his basketball do all the talking.

However, this cannot become a selfish revenge mission. Morant does not need to score 40 points, celebrate after every basket or respond to every attempt at rage bait. His biggest victory would be proving that he is committed to using his extraordinary talent to help Portland win.

That means controlling his emotions without changing who he is. Morant should still attack the basket fearlessly and allow his nearly unstoppable athleticism to put pressure on Memphis. He simply needs to remain quiet afterward and let the final score deliver his message.

That is why the second game might be more important than the first. Portland will remain in Memphis and face the Grizzlies again two days later, creating another emotional test before Morant has much time to escape the spotlight.

Tests like this do not come around often. One strong performance could be powered by adrenaline, but returning to the same court and maintaining that control would show genuine growth. The second meeting will reveal whether Morant can reset mentally and truly leave his past behind him.

Portland should also learn something about its team during this trip. If Morant becomes too focused on proving a personal point, the offense could lose its balance. If he creates opportunities for Deni Avdija, Damian Lillard, Shaedon Sharpe and the rest of his teammates, the Trail Blazers could discover another level.

Morant does not need to conquer Memphis by embarrassing his former organization. He needs to conquer the emotions that could prevent him from playing winning basketball.

His best possible revenge would be staying composed, trusting his teammates and leading Portland to victories. If Morant produces his best team basketball during both games, he will have passed one of the biggest tests of his new beginning.
