A year ago, nobody outside of recruiting circles knew the names Malachi Toney or Bryce Fitzgerald. Now, Miami’s incoming freshman class is walking into a program where two true freshmen from a season ago helped carry the Hurricanes to the doorstep of a national championship – and the newest arrival is already being talked about as one of the most important players in the country before he’s played a single down.

The Blueprint: Toney and Fitzgerald Set the Bar

There’s a reason Miami’s coaching staff wasn’t shy about throwing true freshmen into the fire in 2025, and it’s because the last group did nothing but validate that approach. Malachi Toney, the American Heritage product who chose staying home over leaving, didn’t just play as a true freshman – he became the best receiver in the country not wearing an NFL uniform. Toney’s freshman season is now referenced nationally as the standard for immediate impact, with Billy Tucker and ESPN’s list of top 2026 freshmen to know opening with a direct nod to his rookie campaign, noting that Toney “emerged as a freshman star for Miami en route to the College Football Playoff national title game.” Toney finished with over 1,200 yards, more than a dozen total touchdowns, and a runner-up finish for ACC Rookie of the Year honors that undersold just how much he changed Miami’s offense the moment he stepped on the field. He dazzled left, right, and everywhere in between.

Fitzgerald’s story ran on a quieter track but was every bit as important. As a true freshman defensive back, Fitzgerald forced his way onto the field in a secondary that desperately needed juice after the disaster of 2024, and by the time the calendar flipped to January, he was a trusted piece of a defense that shut down Texas A&M in College Station where he displayed his ball-hawking abilities and sealed the game with a last minute pick.

Despite how most of the game went, Miami made the plays in the end to beat Texas A&M 😤

Between Toney on offense and Fitzgerald on defense, Miami’s coaching staff proved that when the talent is right, the depth chart bends to accommodate it – regardless of class. That track record matters enormously walking into 2026, because it’s exactly the environment the next wave of true freshmen is stepping into.

Before Toney and Fitzgerald, recent true freshman who shined at the U include Gregory Rousseau, Kamren Kinchens, and OJ Freqerique.

Jackson Cantwell: The Most Important Newcomer in the Country

If Toney was the headline freshman of 2025, Jackson Cantwell is shaping up to be the headline freshman of the entire sport in 2026 – not just at Miami. ESPN ranked Cantwell as the No. 1 freshman to know across all of the ACC, writing that he’s “one of the nation’s most important newcomers regardless of class and certainly faces some of the highest expectations of any freshman,” pointing to both his physical ceiling as a 6-foot-8, 330-pound tackle and Miami’s proven ability to churn out first-round talent at the position after turning Francis Mauigoa into a top-10 pick.

The hype isn’t just about size and recruiting pedigree, either. Bruce Feldman and the Athletic’s college football “Freaks List” ranked Cantwell fourth among the most physically gifted players in the country, and the underlying numbers explain why. Cantwell comes from elite bloodlines – his father, Christian Cantwell, is a five-time world shot put champion and Olympic silver medalist, while his mother, Teri Steer Cantwell, was a two-time NCAA shot put champion and Olympian in her own right. Jackson inherited every bit of that explosiveness: as a 15-year-old he was already bench-pressing 405 pounds for four reps, and by 16 he was putting up 505 pounds on the bench and 475 on a close-grip variation, all while standing 6-foot-8 and moving like a much smaller athlete.

Since arriving in Coral Gables, the testing numbers have only reinforced the hype. Cantwell’s peak power output has been measured at 9,461 watts, which actually exceeds the number Mauigoa posted as a junior – the same Mauigoa season that made him by far the most powerful player on Miami’s entire roster in 2025, nearly 1,000 watts clear of anyone else on the team. Cantwell’s max velocity of 17.3 mph is right in line with Mauigoa’s 17.6 from his final year in Coral Gables. In other words, before he’s played a college snap, Cantwell is already testing like the best offensive lineman on last year’s team.

Toney and Cantwell: The Next Version of Toney and Bell/Mauigoa Paving the Way for the Slippery WR

Miami fans got a preview last season of what happens when a downhill blocker and a twitchy skill player are on the field together, watching Markel Bell and Francis Mauigoa clear paths for Toney and the rest of the offensive front to bulldoze defenses open for Mark Fletcher Jr. and the receiving corps. This year, the pairing to watch might be Cantwell and Toney.

Cantwell projects as an immediate starter at left tackle, and with his combination of size and sledgehammer power in the run game, he gives Miami’s offense a legitimate downhill knockdown piece on the perimeter. Toney, meanwhile, is exactly the kind of twitchy, make-you-miss playmaker who thrives when he’s got a bulldozer clearing the alley in front of him. It’s not hard to picture Cristobal and Shannon Dawson scheming up perimeter runs and screens that put Cantwell in space ahead of Toney, letting Toney do what he does best – get skinny, find the crease, and go – while riding behind 330 pounds of momentum. If that duo starts connecting on those plays the way Bell and Mauigoa did creating lanes up front last season, Miami’s offense could have another signature one-two punch on its hands. The same goes for Mark Fletcher, CharMar Brown, and Jordan Lyle.

The Rest of the Wave: More True Freshmen Ready to Contribute

Cantwell isn’t walking into Coral Gables alone. Miami’s 2026 class is loaded with names who could see the field early, continuing the program’s recent trend of true freshmen playing meaningful roles rather than redshirting.

JJ Dunnigan, a four-star defensive back who was the gem of Miami’s secondary class, projects to compete for snaps immediately. At 6-foot-2 with the versatility to play safety, nickel, or outside corner, Dunnigan gives Hetherman’s defense another long, rangy piece to plug into a secondary that’s still replacing significant production from last season’s group.

At receiver, Somourian Wingo and Milan Parris both arrive with the kind of juice that fits Miami’s vertical passing game. With Cooper Barkate and Toney anchoring the top of the depth chart, neither Wingo nor Parris needs to be an every-down player immediately, but both have the tools to carve out rotational roles and give Dawson more speed to deploy in space.

Camdin Portis, the son of former Miami and NFL star Clinton Portis, brings a football pedigree and a competitive edge that has coaches excited about his upside at cornerback. A legacy commitment who chose Miami over a long list of suitors, Portis profiles as a nickel corner who could push for playing time as the staff continues to churn the secondary through the portal and the draft.

While Cantwell has dominated the headlines, another two true freshman offensive linemen have quietly become one of the most buzzed-about names inside the building. Ben Congdon, a four-star tackle out of Ohio, has reportedly turned heads throughout the spring and summer, and it didn’t take long for word to spread nationally. Freaks’ List author, Bruce Feldman, relayed just how much buzz Congdon has already generated, tweeting: “I heard a lot about Ben Congdon when I visited Miami in April. They were so fired up about his potential. I guess he was a wrestler in Ohio and really impressed the Canes staff with how well he can move his feet especially for being such a big dude.”

That wrestling background shows up on tape in the form of rare footwork and balance for a player his size, and it’s exactly the kind of trait Miami’s staff has prioritized when building out one of the best offensive line rooms in the country. Congdon isn’t guaranteed to start immediately with Cantwell entrenched on the other side, but the level of internal excitement suggests he won’t be buried on the depth chart for long.

Rounding out the true freshman linemen to watch is Joel Ervin, a 6-foot-7, 335-pound tackle out of Fort Myers who Miami flipped away from Louisville during the spring evaluation period. Ervin’s combination of natural, God-given strength and untapped upside has scouts and coaches alike convinced he’s a developmental piece who could turn into a real contributor sooner rather than later, giving Miami yet another massive body to develop up front.

A Program Built to Play Freshmen

What Toney and Fitzgerald proved last season – and what Cantwell, Congdon, Dunnigan, Wingo, Parris, Portis, and Ervin are all being counted on to prove this season – is that Miami’s coaching staff has no interest in redshirting talent just because of a jersey number’s age. Cristobal’s staff has built a program where true freshmen aren’t just given a chance to compete; they’re given a real runway to start immediately if they earn it.

Given what happened the last time Miami trusted a loaded freshman class, there’s no reason to expect this staff to change course now. If even half of this group lives up to the hype currently swirling around them – particularly Cantwell, who enters the season as arguably the most-watched true freshman in the entire sport at a position with less hype than what Toney displayed last year – Miami’s 2026 roster might look back on this signing class the same way it now looks back on 2025’s.

The Hurricanes didn’t just win with veterans last year. They won with freshmen who refused to play like freshmen. This year’s group is being built the exact same way.

The Pipeline Doesn’t Stop Here

The buck does not stop in 2026, either. Miami’s 2027 class is already generating buzz of its own, headlined by A’Mir Sears, who is drawing early comparisons to Travis Hunter for his two-way ability and playmaking instincts. He’s joined on the board by a wave of five-star talent including Donte Wright, Israel Abrams, Nick Lennear, and Jaiden Bryant – a group that suggests Cristobal’s pipeline isn’t slowing down anytime soon. The proof of concept has been established, and it should only continue from here. Cristobal already had the recruiting figured out from the moment he arrived in Coral Gables. Now he has the other two pieces that turn a loaded roster into a champion: winning and NFL placement.
