The Royals have called Kauffman Stadium their home for every season since 1973, and it now looks like that era will end come 2030.
After the Kansas City Chiefs had announced a move out of Truman Sports Complex and Arrowhead Stadium for a soon-to-be built indoor stadium in Kansas, the Royals also took steps to leave the complex. In April, the team formally announced plans for a new ballpark in the Crown Center area of Kansas City — just south of downtown.
The project, which is expected to exceed $2 billion, includes a $1.9 billion stadium that is split in funding between the Royals and public money.
On Tuesday, the Royals offered the latest glimpse of the stadium design with renderings from the Kansas City-based architecture firm Populous — the same firm behind the Bills' new Highmark Stadium.
Two new renderings of the proposed Royals stadium from the City Council committee meeting this morning. The first is a shot inside the stadium. The second shows an entrance plaza where most fans would enter through. More details on this important meeting on @kmbc later. pic.twitter.com/1ERAUhJOOy

The @Royals intend to break ground on a new stadium next May w/ a planned opening in March 2030, which would be a year before the lease at Kauffman Stadium runs out.

The stadium itself would be $1.2 billion, w/ another $500M for infrastructure and $200M for a team office in LF.
The Royals are planning to break ground and start construction in May of 2027 with the aim for it to be ready for Opening Day in 2030. To do so, the Royals would end their lease with Kauffman Stadium a year early.
