Australia's first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin concluded on Day 4 with an unexpected result. Bangladesh secured victory after chasing down the 57-run target set by the hosts in their second innings. The match was played at Marrara Stadium from August 13 to 16, 2026, and marked the opening fixture of the two-match series.

Australia captain Pat Cummins reflected on the defeat and acknowledged the quality of Bangladesh's performance throughout the match. Cummins identified the opening day as the turning point in the contest, pointing to Australia's inability to build substantial batting partnerships and their bowling attack's failure to take crucial wickets at key moments.

"Probably that day one. I thought our prep was spot on, no excuses. They played well. We had to find a way to bat longer and then we couldn't penetrate with the ball. Everytime there's a game like this, you look at match-ups," the losing captain said at the post-match presentation.

Where did Australia lose?

Cummins offered a comprehensive view of Bangladesh's overall performance across all departments of the game. Najmul Hossain Shanto's team demonstrated composure and tactical awareness throughout the match, ultimately proving too strong for the Australian side.

"We've just finished the game, so we'll think about it. We're pretty good at bouncing back. They outplayed us in all facets; they were patient and disciplined," Cummins added.

Bangladesh's bowling attack proved decisive in the contest. Hasan Mahmud was named Player of the Match for his contributions with the ball. Mehidy Hasan Miraz also made a significant impact, taking a five-wicket haul while also scoring a half-century with the bat. Bangladesh's first-innings total of 426 proved substantial enough to put Australia under pressure, and the visitors' disciplined approach in the field and with the ball ultimately secured the win.

Bangladesh's all-round dominance

Cameron Green's batting effort in Australia's second innings stood out as a bright spot for the hosts. Green scored 85, his highest Test score on home soil, but lacked sufficient support from the other batsmen. Cummins acknowledged Green's contribution and the challenge of maintaining momentum without adequate partnership support.

Josh Hazlewood's performance also drew Cummins's attention despite the overall defeat. The fast bowler has faced injury setbacks in recent times but continued to demonstrate his work ethic and commitment. The captain's remarks underscored Hazlewood's resilience and dedication to the team despite physical challenges.

"Green's tempo showed how good he is, he needed couple of us to hang in with him. Josh hasn't had a great run for injuries but he's one of the hardest workers," Cummins said.

The defeat left Australia facing a 0-1 deficit in the two-match series. The hosts would need to regroup and respond in the second Test to level the series. Cummins indicated that the team would analyse the match and work on their approach moving forward, noting that Australia had shown resilience in bouncing back from difficult situations in the past.
