The officiating in the WNBA is back under the spotlight after a viral replay involving Caitlin Clark.
The friction between Caitlin Clark and the rest of the WNBA stems from a mix of rookie initiation, intense spotlight, and physical play.
Many fans feel Clark is target number one, pointing to moments like Chennedy Carter’s away-from-the-ball shoulder block, or her heated battles with college rival Angel Reese.
While some people argue referees aren’t doing enough to protect her, WNBA veterans maintain that rough defense and hard fouls are simply standard welcome-to-the-league moments every rookie faces.
However, a call during the Indiana Fever’s win over the Atlanta Dream has caught the attention.
WNBA fans believe Caitlin Clark was wrongly penalised for foul against Atlanta Dream
In the Fever win, Rhyne Howard went up for a three-point shot with Caitlin Clark closely following, which sees the latter put her fingertips if anything on the back of the Dream guard.
Clark immediately called for a challenge and the commentator on ESPN admitted she would be ‘shocked’ if it wasn’t overturned. And it ended up standing after an official review from the WNBA officials.
The footage was shared on social media and most fans shared the same reaction, questioning how the officials didn’t overturn the decision or how they even called it in the first place.
One supporter said: “This is wild.”
“Does the WNBA even use rules or do they just make it up as they go?” Another fan said.
Another suggested the refs had an ulterior motive: “Refs tried to steal this game.”
“I feel so bad for Caitlin Clark. She always gets different treatment.” This supporter stated.
Lastly, this fan couldn’t believe the call: “There was NO FOUL on the 3pt attempt! That’s a terrible call!”
Despite any debatable calls, Caitlin Clark continues to do her talking on the court, putting up 26 points, nine assists, and three rebounds in 41 minutes of action against the Dream.
