The New York Knicks will not have to wait long to see how they measure up against some of the NBA’s most compelling new teams.
Although the complete 2026-27 schedule is not scheduled to be released until Thursday, the league has already announced several major dates.
Three matchups stand out for the defending NBA champions: LeBron James’ Madison Square Garden debut with the Philadelphia 76ers, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s visit with the Miami Heat and a Christmas Day NBA Finals rematch against the San Antonio Spurs.

LeBron arrives on banner night
New York will open its championship defense against Philadelphia on Oct. 20 at Madison Square Garden. Before the game, the Knicks will raise their first NBA championship banner since 1973.
The ceremony will be followed by James’ first regular-season appearance with the 76ers. Philadelphia signed the former Lakers star to a two-year contract this summer and also acquired Jaylen Brown, creating a new core alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
James has produced numerous memorable performances at the Garden, but this visit will come with a different level of attention. The 76ers and Knicks met during last season’s Eastern Conference semifinals, with New York advancing before sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers and defeating San Antonio in the NBA Finals.

The teams will meet again in Philadelphia on Oct. 30 to begin NBA Cup group play.
Giannis visits for Black Friday
The Knicks will host Antetokounmpo and the Heat on Nov. 27 in their final NBA Cup group-stage game.
Miami acquired Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks during the offseason, pairing the two-time MVP with Bam Adebayo. The move immediately transformed the Heat into one of the most dangerous challengers to New York in the Eastern Conference.
The Black Friday matchup will stream on Prime Video and could carry significant tournament implications. New York won the NBA Cup last season before completing its championship run, giving Jalen Brunson and his teammates two titles to defend.

Miami’s size presents a particularly intriguing challenge. The Knicks can counter Antetokounmpo and Adebayo with Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby and Mitchell Robinson, potentially making the matchup an early preview of another postseason series.
Spurs return on Christmas
San Antonio will return to Madison Square Garden on Christmas Day for its first rematch with New York since losing the 2026 NBA Finals in five games.
The game will begin at noon Eastern on ABC and ESPN, opening the league’s five-game Christmas schedule. It will place Finals MVP Brunson against Victor Wembanyama, who will attempt to lead the Spurs back into championship contention.

New York also defeated San Antonio in last season’s NBA Cup championship, meaning the Knicks got the better of the Spurs in both of the league’s major title matchups.
Those results should give San Antonio plenty of motivation when it returns to the Garden. For the Knicks, the nationally televised game offers another opportunity to show that last season’s breakthrough was the beginning of a sustained run rather than a one-year peak.
