The moment that both Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo went down with injuries in Game 4 of the Minnesota Timberwolves' playoff series with the Denver Nuggets last year probably should've been a dark one for the organization. Instead, Edwards' reaction to his and DiVincenzo's unfortunate circumstances may have set the tone for the Timberwolves, as a team, to keep their heads up. In a new episode of The Jon Krawczynski Show, a podcast hosted by The Athletic's Timberwolves reporter of the same name, Timberwolves president Tim Connelly told an amazing inside story about what exactly happened when both Edwards and DiVincenzo found themselves hurt in the locker room at the same time as their teammates were still engaged in a heated playoff battle. Per Connelly, when Edwards and DiVincenzo banged into each other while sitting in their respective wheelchairs as they were en route to get X-rayed, Edwards had a hilarious way of describing his and DiVincenzo's situation:
During the NBA Playoffs Anthony Edwards & Donte DiVincenzo both got hurt in the same game. They went back to get X Rays. When they were in the back they banged into each other in their wheelchairs. Ant looked at Donte and said “Man we’d be a cold ass wheel chair basketball… — The Daily Wolves (@TheDailyWolves) August 17, 2026 Would anyone else in the NBA, any other star, deliver such a quote while facing a potentially serious injury? Honestly, Edwards might be one of one here. You can find Connelly telling this story starting at the 25:05 timestamp below:
Here's Connelly's story about Edwards' "wheelchair basketball team" quote in full:
"That night was scary," Connelly started. Donte [DiVincenzo] goes down. It could not have been more sad. It was Donte, his wife, his beautiful two-year-old, his dad, and his son just saying, 'What's wrong, Daddy? What do you have, a boo-boo? Oh god. And then Ant [Anthony Edwards], kind of a funny moment from that evening, Ant comes in like 15 minutes later, and Donte's like, 'What the eff are you doing in here, man?' And they were both going to get X-rayed and they were banging each other in the wheelchair. Ant looks at me and goes, 'Man, we'd be a cold-ass wheelchair basketball team.'"
Of course, things kind of still worked out for the Timberwolves after these Edwards and DiVincenzo injuries. They went on to eliminate the Nuggets in six games before eventually falling in the second round to the San Antonio Spurs. And despite a hyperextended knee and bone bruise, Edwards was pretty effective against the eventual Western Conference champions relative to expectations from his injury. Given his recent trash talk of the Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder, it sure seems like Edwards has fully recovered, too. He wouldn't be trash-talking like that if he didn't feel great about his and the new-look Timberwolves' chances of making noise after acquiring LaMelo Ball. DiVincenzo, meanwhile, is facing a longer recovery after tearing his Achilles tendon. At the time of this writing, it's unclear when the shooting guard might return. He has not been ruled out for the entire upcoming season, but there is no definitive timeline for his return until further notice.
