1893: Scotland’s Willie Auchterlonie captured the Open Championship at Prestwick Golf Club, winning by two strokes for his lone major title.

1906: Philadelphia Athletics rookie Jack Coombs and Boston Americans pitcher Joe Harris each went the distance in a 24-inning game, which Philadelphia won 4-1. Coombs struck out 18 and allowed one run.

1931: Yankees slugger Lou Gehrig hit his third grand slam in four days and homered in a sixth straight game during New York’s victory over Boston.

1946: Patty Berg won the inaugural U.S. Women’s Open at Spokane Country Club, becoming the first champion in the history of the championship.
