1880: Two teams composed mostly of Boston department-store employees played the first known baseball game under electric lights at Nantasket Beach in Hull, Massachusetts. The nine-inning exhibition used three wooden light towers.

1927: Babe Ruth hit his 400th career home run as the New York Yankees defeated the Philadelphia Athletics 12-2 at Shibe Park, becoming the first major league player to reach the milestone.

1940: Byron Nelson captured the PGA Championship, defeating Sam Snead for his first PGA Championship and third major title.
