Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are considering selling their stakes in Chelsea to Clearlake, reports today are claiming.

An interesting development on the ownership side at Chelsea has seen reports come out this afternoon that Todd Boehly and fellow part-owner of the club Mark Walter are “exploring a sale” of their stakes in Chelsea to Clearlake Capital, the Behdad Eghbali headed group who are the majority owners.
The Daily Mail report that talks are “ongoing” over a deal that would value Chelsea at £5bn. That’s pretty good going, considering the group paid £2.5bn for the club (as well as committing £1.75bn more in investment).

There have long been stories about Boehly and Eghbali not getting on, and the two are rarely seen at games together. Boehly started as the face of the takeover, but has given way to Eghbali in that department too. A rift has always been denied by the club, but this will be seen as further evidence that there is something to it. Clearlake own 61.5% of Chelsea, with Boehly and Walter making up the bulk of the remainder.
Having fewer owners would be a cleaner setup all around, and it does seem like Boehly is happy to bail.
