Baltimore Ravens fans might snicker after watching Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken struggle mightily in the 34-10 loss to the Chicago Bears this past Saturday. More bizarre, Monken remarked by calling the Week 1 debacle “A lot of fun” in the post-game press conference before proceeding to a lengthy sermon of sour introspection.
Ravens fans have heard Monken murmur many times in post-game press conferences during his previous tenure, and now as the leader of the Browns, a simmering desire to defeat him will arise. The typical fanatic mantra of “it’s only preseason” might apply, but the usage of such a mantra is self-serving and seemingly subjective. Had Monken and the Browns come out victorious over the Bears, his post-game conference might have featured an arrogant zeal and aura. The thing is, despite the debacle, Monken still exhibited some deflection.
Nevertheless, Browns projected starting quarterback Deshaun Watson played just a few series into the second quarter of Saturday’s loss, and Browns reserve quarterbacks Shadeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel each threw interceptions versus the Bears reserve defense. Monken’s offense was just 6/17 on third-down conversions, and the sputtering Browns were little match for Bears head coach Ben Johnson. Monken will miss Ravens' all-pro quarterback Lamar Jackson dearly during the 2026 NFL regular season, but more emphatically, Ravens' fans will rejoice continually thanks to his timely salutation earlier this Spring.
