India has produced some of the finest all-rounders in the history of Test cricket. Players who could contribute meaningfully with both bat and ball have often been the difference in close matches across generations.

From the pace of Kapil Dev in the 1980s to the spin of Ravindra Jadeja in the modern era, India's all-rounders have left a lasting mark on the longest format.

Here are the top eight all-rounders in Test cricket from India:

1. Kapil Dev

Kapil Dev played 131 Tests for India, scoring 5,248 runs and taking 434 wickets. He remains the only player in Test cricket history to have scored more than 5,000 runs and taken more than 400 wickets. An attacking right-handed batsman and a medium-pace bowler capable of swinging the ball both ways, Kapil was known for his yorkers and his ability to perform under pressure. Wisden named him the Indian Cricketer of the Century, and he is a member of the ICC Hall of Fame. He also captained India to the 1983 World Cup title, cementing his place as one of the greatest cricketers the country has produced.

2. Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja reached 350 Test wickets during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle in August 2026, becoming only the fifth Indian bowler to reach that landmark. His 350th wicket came when Sri Lankan batter Keshara Nuwantha mistimed a shot off an away-turning delivery, with Shubman Gill taking the catch. Jadeja, 37, also joined Kapil Dev as the only Indians to have scored more than 4,000 Test runs and taken 350 or more wickets. Among left-arm spinners globally, his 350 wickets place him third behind Rangana Herath of Sri Lanka (433) and Daniel Vettori of New Zealand (362). He has been one of the pillars of India's spin attack in Tests for the last decade.

3. Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin has taken 537 Test wickets for India, making him the second-highest wicket-taker for the country behind only Anil Kumble (619). He surpassed Kapil Dev's tally of 434 Test wickets in the second innings of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali, taking four wickets in that innings to finish with 436 at that stage. Ashwin also scored five Test hundreds while batting in the lower order, underlining his value as a genuine all-rounder. He started as an unorthodox off-spinner who could bat and developed into a complete two-dimensional cricketer. Jadeja and Ashwin have been the pillars of India's spin attack in Tests for the last decade.

4. Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh took 417 Test wickets for India, making him the fourth-highest wicket-taker for the country in Test cricket. He scored 2224 runs including two centuries in red-ball cricket. He was a key part of India's bowling attack across multiple eras and played a significant role in several memorable Test victories. His off-spin was a consistent threat to batters around the world, and he remains one of the most successful spinners India has produced in the red-ball format.

5. Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble took 619 Test wickets for India, the most by any Indian bowler in Test history. His wicket tally places him among the highest wicket-takers in the history of Test cricket overall. Kumble was a relentless leg-spinner who could bowl long spells and extract turn and bounce on a variety of surfaces. His ability to take wickets in all conditions made him the cornerstone of India's bowling attack for well over a decade, and his record remains the benchmark for every Indian bowler who has followed him. With the bat, he has scored 2506 runs an under the radar score which was overshadowed by his bowling skills.

6. Ravi Shastri

Ravi Shastri played 80 Test matches for India, scoring 3,830 runs and taking 151 wickets. His Test batting average was 35.79, with 11 hundreds and a highest score of 206. His Test bowling average was 40.96, and he took two five-wicket hauls. A left-arm spinner who could open both the batting and the bowling, Shastri was a versatile cricketer who served India across formats. He won the Champion of Champions award at the 1985 World Championship of Cricket, a tournament in which his all-round contributions were central to India's success.

7. Irfan Pathan

Irfan Pathan played 29 Test matches for India, scoring 1,105 runs and taking 100 Test wickets. He became the second Indian cricketer to take a hat-trick in a Test match, a feat that highlighted his ability to trouble top-order batters with his left-arm swing bowling. Pathan was a genuine pace-bowling all-rounder who could contribute with the bat in the lower order. His ability to move the ball in both directions made him a potent weapon in Test conditions, and his 100 Test wickets remain a significant achievement given the relatively short span of his Test career.

8. Vinoo Mankad

Vinoo Mankad is one of the earliest and most celebrated all-rounders in Indian Test cricket history. He was a right-arm off-break bowler and a capable opening batsman who contributed significantly with both bat and ball for India in the early years of their Test cricket journey. He has scored 2109 runs and taken 162 wickets in 44 Tests. Mankad's performances laid the foundation for the all-rounder tradition in Indian cricket, and his contributions in the red-ball format earned him a lasting place in the country's cricket history.
