The Portland Trail Blazers should not force Jeremy Sochan into a traditional position or predetermined role during the 2026-27 season. Instead, Portland should allow him to become its chaos weapon.
Sochan is not the type of player who needs to receive the same assignment every night. His minutes should change depending on the opponent, with somewhere between 15 and 20 per game serving as a reasonable starting point.
Some nights, the Trail Blazers may need him to defend a quick guard. Other matchups could require him to battle an elite wing, powerful forward or even a center.
That unpredictability is exactly what makes Sochan valuable. At 6-foot-8, he possesses the defensive versatility and high-intensity style needed to compete against nearly every position.
There are not many players capable of matching up with opponents from one through five without completely compromising a defense. Sochan is part of that rare breed.
His offensive limitations, especially as a shooter, cannot be ignored. However, Portland does not need him to become a high-volume scorer.
This roster already features Ja Morant, Deni Avdija, Shaedon Sharpe, Damian Lillard and several other players who will demand touches. Sochan simply needs to provide everything else.
Portland should let him handle the ball occasionally, crash the glass, defend the opposing team’s best player and create emotional energy. His toughness, personality, effort and basketball intelligence can all help without requiring plays to be called for him.
Sochan also arrives with experience from being part of the New York Knicks’ championship run. Even though he held a limited role, spending time inside a title-winning environment should provide lessons that cannot be taught during an ordinary season.
There is always some risk when adding a high-energy personality. Sochan’s emotions could occasionally work against him, but there is a much greater chance that his intensity becomes a positive force for Portland.
This signing does not need to produce huge statistics to become successful. If Sochan’s defense, versatility and energy help Portland win a playoff series, bringing him aboard will have been a massive victory.
That is why his role should remain unpredictable rather than large. Opponents should never know when Sochan is entering, whom he will defend or what Portland will ask him to do.
Chaos does not always need to be controlled. Sometimes, it needs to be unleashed and in the case of the Trail Blazers. This is a team that doing just that, may fully pay off.
