Travis Kelce has spent over a decade as one of the NFL’s most dominant tight ends, going on to win three Super Bowl championships.

However, heading into the 14th NFL season, skepticism toward the Kansas City Chiefs star is becoming increasingly prevalent, and the narrative around him is shifting.

Between his high-profile marriage to Taylor Swift and concerns regarding his on-field production, one anonymous NFL scout has bluntly declared Travis Kelce done and over.

NFL insider Jason La Canfora recently published a report regarding the overall state of the Chiefs’ passing game as quarterback Patrick Mahomes recovers from a torn ACL.

When asked about Travis Kelce’s value as a player in the upcoming NFL season, an anonymous scout made a harsh assessment of the 36-year-old.

According to Heavy.com, the scout told La Canfora, “Kelce is done. That’s over. What you saw last year, that’s what he is.”   

This scout’s verdict didn’t emerge from nowhere; it reflects a broader wave of doubt from NFL evaluators who are increasingly skeptical of Kelce as he heads towards his 14th season.

Some analysts have tied his production dip to his relationship with Taylor Swift, which began in 2023. 

The Tight Ends Records Have Been In Steady Decline

Kelce hit career lows in the past year, seeing a 7.8 percent drop in his targets. This is nearly twice his career average, according to Pro Football Focus. The athlete finished with 76 receptions, his lowest ever recorded since 2015.

He only scored 13 touchdowns combined over the past three years, a number that is telling when compared with the twelve he scored in 2022 alone. His 851 receiving yards in 2025 were also his second-lowest total in any full season.  

While these numbers back up a narrative of decline, historically the drop-off is normal for tight ends his age, with similar declines happening to other athletes late in their careers.

Speculation about Kelce’s conditioning spread after an AI-generated video depicting him with a “dad bod” circulated on social media following his wedding to Swift.

Some viewers identified the video as fake, while others questioned whether it reflected Kelce’s actual condition entering the season.

These speculations and questions prompted Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid to address the concerns. 

According to CBS Sports, Reid said, “He came back in good shape.” He continued, “Everybody thought he was going to come back with this ‘dad bod’ that I heard about. I’m going, ‘This guy looks the same as he’s always looked.’ Everything is tight, man. He’s out here. He’s running. He’s competing.”

“Pat trusts him like crazy. I love seeing it. 14 years in and still going strong,” the coach added.

Former NFL MVP quarterback Rich Gannon, who played under Reid earlier in his career, expressed confidence in the head coach, particularly his ability to bring out the most from his players.

Gannon said, “Andy will be honest, and he’ll address those concerns. He’ll find a way to get it fixed in every room. With Kelce, he’ll manage that workload and be careful with him.”  

What’s Next For The Kansas City Chiefs?

The bigger question looming over this offseason isn’t just about Kelce individually; it’s about how much of the Chiefs’ offense should continue to run through him.

Kansas City Chiefs face real questions regarding their structure as it heads into the season. Mahomes is working his way back from knee surgery, and the receiving corps around him remains largely unproven beyond Rashee Rice. 

Kelce re-signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in March on a new contract, opting to return for his 14th season rather than retire, a decision he has said was inspired partly by his wife, Swift, and how she creatively pushed herself in her own career.

Travis Kelce Still Has A Respectable Rating As A Tight End

Even with his production down from his peak, Kelce still finished 2025 ranked fourth among all tight ends in both receiving yards and targets, and Pro Football Focus gave him a respectable, if not elite, grade.

He received an overall PFF grade of 72.0 in the 2025 season, 14th among 37 qualified tight ends. 

Given the head coach’s glowing reports on Kelce’s physical condition, labeling a highly decorated athlete as completely finished seems unwarranted. The objective data reflects a minor drop in overall production rather than a complete career collapse.

Whether this ends up being a signal that Kelce’s career is winding down will likely come down to how the 2026 season plays out on the field.
