Oregon State guard Dominika Paurová presses toward the basket as the Oregon State Beavers take on the Nebraska Huskers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday, March 24, 2024, at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore.

An ACL tear is devastating enough for a basketball player. Suffering the same season-ending injury in back-to-back years, and still finding the resolve to climb that mountain twice, is almost unimaginable.

For Kentucky women’s basketball guard Dominika Paurová, the last two years have been an agonizing test of mental and physical fortitude that she will never forget. Ruled out for both her sophomore (2024-25) and redshirt sophomore (2025-26) seasons due to torn ACL’s, Paurová is finally gearing up to make her long-awaited debut in Wildcat blue.

And if you aren’t a fan of this young lady already, I have a sneaky suspicion you will be soon enough.

The grueling reality of rehab

To truly appreciate Paurová’s comeback, you have to understand the brutal, unglamorous reality of recovering from an ACL tear. It isn’t simply waiting for a ligament to heal. Recovery is a daily, grueling grind, and setbacks will happen; just ask Jayden Quaintance.

It means watching your leg muscles atrophy, relearning how to walk, enduring agonizing physical therapy sessions where simply bending your knee feels impossible, and coping with the emotional isolation of watching teammates compete without you, being unable to do the one thing you have loved doing since you were a child, but having to be around it every single day.

Going through that heartbreak once is a nightmare. Doing it back-to-back requires an elite mindset, and when I spoke to Dominika at Media Days, I could tell she has it.

“Initially, I was upset when it happened. I was like in a little bit of denial,” Paurová admits, looking back on the devastating second tear. “But I was able to flip my mindset quicker than the first time it happened. I cannot do anything about it. I just have to move on.”

Instead of letting the unfairness of the situation break her, she used her prior experience as a roadmap. “Obviously, I went through the process a second time, so I knew what to expect,” she explains. “I knew what I had to do; I had to take a step back, celebrate the small victories.”

Through the darkest days of her recovery, she wasn’t alone. Paurová credits the Kentucky program, calling her team and staff the “most supportive people I could think of,” for helping her stay afloat when the rehab felt endless.

A glimpse of the talent waiting in the wings

While her recovery has understandably dominated the conversation, it has also overshadowed just how talented Paurová already proved herself to be before arriving in Lexington. After two years away from game action, it’s easy to forget that Kentucky isn’t simply getting a healthy player back; it’s getting a proven winner.

Before transferring to Kentucky, Paurová was a nice piece for Oregon State, which had a phenomenal 2023-24 season. As a true freshman, she played in all 35 games, stepping up big during the Beavers’ magical run to the Elite Eight.

  • Shot 48.0% from the field and 37.2% from beyond the arc.
  • Averaged 5.5 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 16.4 minutes per game.
  • Scored in double digits seven times, including a career-high 17 points (and three 3-pointers) in the NCAA Tournament First Round against Eastern Michigan.
  • In her very first college game, she stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, an assist, and a block.

Those numbers tell only part of the story. They reveal a player with efficient shooting, poise beyond her years, and the ability to shine on college basketball’s biggest stage thanks to her time with the Czech Republic national team. Now, after spending two years rebuilding both her body and confidence, Paurová finally has the opportunity to remind everyone what made her such a coveted transfer in the first place.

Why Big Blue Nation should be fired up

The drive and raw energy it takes to rebuild your body from scratch twice in short succession is nothing short of incredible. Paurová isn’t just returning to the court; she is returning with a deep, infectious appreciation for the game that was taken away from her… twice.

“I’m super excited, a lot of energy, I am just super excited,” Paurová beamed. “So anything this team needs [me] to do, I will help… and I am just so excited to play in front of Big Blue Nation.”

Talent alone doesn’t define who Dominika Paurová is. Plenty of players can shoot the basketball. Plenty can score. Very few possess the perseverance to rebuild themselves from the ground up twice and return with the same enthusiasm they had before going through adversity.

Kentucky is getting one of the toughest competitors in all of college basketball, men’s or women’s. She never let injuries break her, and now she’s ready to break opponents.
