Rams rookie quarterback Ty Simpson got his first taste of NFL action this preseason, and the results were encouraging: The 2026 No. 13 overall pick went 21-for-25 passing for 190 yards and two touchdowns. But Simpson wasn't interested in dwelling on the numbers afterward. "Yeah, progress," Simpson said when asked to describe the overall effect of getting his first NFL action in. "Um, you know, I got a lot to learn. A lot of learning opps in that game right there. And, hopefully I'm going to keep growing. I'm not looking for perfection, I'm looking for progress, and, you know, excited for the next up."
What a preseason debut for rookie QB Ty Simpson!🔥 The #13 overall pick led the @RamsNFL to a 20-12 win over the Chiefs with: 🔹 21/25 C/ATT 🔹 190 passing yards 🔹 2 TD He spoke with our @DarrenMHaynes after his dominant performance⬇️ pic.twitter.com/2ODds7veUW — Sports Central LA (@SportsCentralLA) August 15, 2026 The efficient outing — an 84% completion rate and two scores without a turnover — showed early chemistry between Simpson and his supporting cast, something he was quick to credit after the game. "Yeah, it was great," Simpson said. "Guys did a great job executing well. You know, everybody was on task and effort to execute the play. So, you know, I just threw the ball, the guys did the rest." For a rookie carrying the weight of a top draft investment, the emphasis on process over results stood out. He won't crack the starting lineup unless an injury befalls Matthew Stafford, and he still technically needs to beat Stetson Bennett for the QB2 role. It's a great start, though, and the Rams will have more chances to evaluate Simpson's growth as the preseason continues. Two touchdowns and no interceptions is a strong first impression by any measure, but how the coaching staff manages his reps the rest of the preseason — and whether he sees extended action in a potential third preseason game — will offer the next data point on where he stands in the quarterback pecking order heading into final roster cuts.
