Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player to walk this earth, but Tyler Hansbrough is the greatest player to don a UNC basketball uniform.

Hansbrough played all four of his collegiate seasons in Chapel Hill, compiling a lengthy list of accolades that includes 2008 National Player of the Year, plus the only player in ACC history to earn First Team All-ACC and All-America honors all four years. The following season, Hansbrough anchored North Carolina's run to its fifth National Championship, with that 2008-09 team one of the best in college basketball history.

Hansbrough then continued his basketball career until 2020, playing his first seven pro seasons in the NBA. Drafted 13th overall by the Indiana Pacers in 2009, Hansbrough largely appeared as a reserve, never reaching the same level of dominance he did as a Tar Heel.

In a recent interview, Hansbrough spoke extensively about his decision to play pro ball, then highlighted how going overseas helped him re-discover his love for the game.

“I would say it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life," Hansbrough said. "I put so much pressure on myself to be a good NBA player, I kind of lost a little bit of love for the game. I was playing to prove people wrong and not really playing because I love the game. I was listening to the wrong people. China, when I went over there, I just got to focus on basketball. In the NBA, I just became a defender, rebounder and I’ll have my time to score when I get it. It’s not like they’re drawing up plays for me, but in China, they were drawing plays and I was starting to get back, get my confidence up, playing good again. And I just got away from all the BS in the States and just got to focus on basketball.”

Tyler Hansbrough says trying to prove his critics wrong eventually made him lose his love for basketball

Hansbrough averaged 20.2 points per game across his four seasons at UNC, but just 6.7 across his seven NBA seasons. Hansbrough's pro PPG average upped to 17.6 in his lone G League season (2016-2017), then back to 23 across his three seasons in China, re-creating that North Carolina-level stardom.

There's players who thrive more in college than the NBA, with Hansbrough being a prime example. Tar Heel Nation is just glad Psycho T chose to play his college ball in Chapel Hill.
