Looking ahead to the 2026-27 regular season, the NBA went through a tangible power swing where several teams in the Eastern Conference improved during the offseason after the New York Knicks took home the title.

Shortly thereafter, Giannis Antetouknmpo was traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat, and the Boston Celtics pulled off a blockbuster deal that sent Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers more recently. Brown’s move to the Sixers precipitated LeBron James signing with Philly, and the East looks like a conference full of contenders all of a sudden after the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs have been billed as the future.

But even outside of those squads, the Central Division is filled with two teams in the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers that look primed to duke it out with the Cleveland Cavaliers this year with star point guard Tyrese Haliburton back in the mix after a year away. All told, the East is relatively wide open with a lot of parity spread across the conference, and it seems to be even deeper than the West right now.

“I think we’re in a great place,” Haliburton said on the Numbers On The Board show. “I think the East, me and Bron talked about this on the pod. The East is, this is probably the first time in my lifetime that the East is more interesting than the West.”

With so many storylines abound, the Pistons almost seem like an afterthought as a sleeper team, which is surprising to consider after Detroit won 60 games and maintained control of the top spot in the East for almost the entire regular season a year ago, but that speaks to the depth overall on that side of the league.

”I just think the teams that go to the playoffs in the east one through eight, eight-ish, if I told you that you were in a coma right now and came out in June and I said ‘yo, they made the Finals,’ you would not be shocked at the majority of our conference,” Haliburton said.

With the NBA crown currently residing in New York for the next year, there is a legitimate case to be made that the league’s power pendulum has shifted to the East for the time being.

”I think Philly could do it,” Haliburton said. “Boston could do it. New York could do it. We could do it. Miami could do it. The Pistons could do it, like there’s many teams that have that opportunity whereas in the West, plenty of teams could, but you’re going with San Antonio and OKC, right? So, I think we’re in a great place. I think it’s exciting from a narrative perspective all the things we could talk about.”

From a competition standpoint, Haliburton’s return will make the Central Division much more competitive from the jump. With the Chicago Bulls and the Bucks continuing to rebuild, the Pacers should challenge the Pistons and Cavs for the division title after it was mainly a two-team race a season ago. Both Cleveland and Detroit still have a bit of offseason business to take care of since Jalen Duren and James Harden are both un-signed restricted free agents, but if they return then the Central Division is expected to be a three-headed monster all throughout the upcoming regular season.
