Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson met the media today before training camp practice and shared his plan for Saturday’s game against the Cleveland Browns. He said that Caleb Williams and several offensive and defensive starters would not play, which, in case you’re wondering, is exactly what they did for preseason game #1 last year.
That means Tyson Bagent will get the start this week, and if he plays as he has in previous preseason games, the offense is in good hands.
And speaking of Saturday’s QB1, “The Bears ended practice with Tyson Bagent’s deep shot to Kaden Davis for a touchdown,” per CHGO’s Adam Jahns.
Saturday’s QB2 got in on the fun as well. “Play of the day was Case Keenum hitting Ray-Ray McCloud in stride for a long TD,” shared the Bear Report’s Zack Pearson. “He got behind the defense.”
Johnson also announced the left tackle battle would wage on, with Kiran Amegadjie getting the start vs Cleveland while rotating in Jedrick Wills Jr., so both get about the same number of snaps, “and we’ll continue to re-assess where we’re at at that position as we go.”
That reassessment will also include Braxton Jones, who returned to practice today in a limited capacity, and should be back in the mix next week.
A few other nuggets from the day.
Bad weather again meant Halas Hall was closed to fans. The Bears did start practice outside, but lightning forced them to finish inside the Walter Payton Center.
Also returning to practice today were defensive back Cam Lewis and linebacker D’Marco Jackson.
Not practicing were Coby Bryant, Tyrique Stevenson, William Wright, Terell Smith, Jaylon Jones, Tony Fields, Luke Newman, Zavion Thomas, Montez Sweat, and Luther Burden III. (link)
