UConn’s connection with the San Antonio Spurs will only continue to grow with the expected hiring of a new general manager for the men’s basketball program. A source confirmed to The Courant on Sunday morning that Charlie Stevens is set to leave his position as San Antonio’s Director of Grassroots Scouting to replace the retiring Tom Moore, who served in the newly-created GM role for one season. The news was first reported on social media by Hardwood Intel. Stevens has spent the last five years with the Spurs, starting as a Basketball Operations Strategy and Scouting Assistant in 2021 before becoming a Player Engagement and Grassroots Scouting Coordinator in 2023 and ultimately being promoted to his active role in 2025. In that time, San Antonio has taken a liking to players produced in Storrs and been rewarded for it. The Spurs used their No. 4 overall pick in 2024 to draft Stephon Castle, who immediately made his mark as NBA Rookie of the Year and helped the organization return to the NBA Finals alongside Victor Wembanyama. They used another first round pick in June to draft former Huskies’ center Tarris Reed Jr. and fill a specific need in the front court. Stevens, a native of the Bronx, N.Y., played Division III hoops at Clark University before graduating in 2021. During his college years, Stevens got started on his career with internships for Pro Hoops, Inc. and Excel Sports Management, where he was a Player Development and Operations Assistant while also interning as Head Video Coordinator for Ironi Nes Ziona BC – a professional team in Israel. “Stevens began compiling 40-page scouting reports of players he believed had the potential to compete in the NBA,” according to an article published by Clark University in 2022. “He submitted the summaries with his résumé to teams throughout the league ‘to show that I had a real passion for the work while also showing what I was capable of, even though I still had much to learn.”’ UConn head coach Dan Hurley said last week that he was looking for someone who can help identify future recruits early, find talent overseas and prepare different scenarios for when the transfer portal opens after the season, in addition to dealing with NIL. Stevens’ hiring is expected to be officially announced later this week.
