UFC 330 delivered a memorable night in Philadelphia on August 15, with championship stakes, a shocking upset and the final appearance of one of the sport’s most entertaining strikers.
Headlined by Islam Makhachev’s welterweight title defense against Ian Machado Garry, the card produced a little bit of everything. Makhachev extended his historic winning streak, Mackenzie Dern successfully defended her strawweight championship, Dustin Stoltzfus pulled off a major upset, and Edson Barboza brought an emotional chapter of his career to a close.
Makhachev survives Garry to make UFC history
Islam Makhachev entered the main event looking to accomplish something no UFC fighter had done before: win 17 consecutive fights inside the Octagon.
Ian Machado Garry had other plans.
The size difference was immediately noticeable, but Makhachev refused to let Garry dictate the fight from distance. The champion repeatedly closed the gap, mixed in takedowns and used his grappling to keep the challenger from settling into his preferred striking rhythm.
Garry, however, proved far more difficult to control than many expected. He defended several takedown attempts, landed meaningful strikes and appeared to have some of his best moments in the third and fourth rounds. At one point, he even managed to draw blood from the champion, providing a visual reminder that Makhachev was in one of the toughest fights of his recent career.
Makhachev ultimately found enough control and positional dominance to secure the unanimous decision, winning 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47.
With the victory, Makhachev moved to 17 consecutive UFC wins, surpassing Anderson Silva’s previous record of 16. More importantly, he successfully defended the welterweight championship and continued to strengthen his case as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history.
Garry may have lost the belt, but he emerged from Philadelphia with his reputation arguably stronger than when he arrived. He demonstrated that his length, striking and takedown defense can create serious problems for even an elite grappler at 170 pounds.
Dern dominates Robertson to retain strawweight gold
The co-main event saw Mackenzie Dern make the first defense of her UFC women’s strawweight championship against Gillian Robertson.
Given both fighters’ elite submission backgrounds, a grappling-heavy battle was expected. Instead, Dern showed a much more complete game.
The champion used her striking, leg kicks and positional control to keep Robertson from establishing the submission heavy offense that has defined much of her career. Robertson had moments, particularly late in the fight, but Dern controlled the majority of the five-round contest.
After 25 minutes, the judges awarded Dern a unanimous decision, 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47.
The victory was particularly important for Dern because it established her as a champion capable of winning outside of simply hunting for submissions. Her wrestling and overall control were noticeably improved, and she now sits firmly at the top of the division.
Stoltzfus shocks Abdul Malik
One of the night’s biggest surprises came in the middleweight division.
Mansur Abdul-Malik entered his matchup with Dustin Stoltzfus as one of the card’s most intriguing prospects. Instead, it was the veteran who walked away with the biggest upset.
After a competitive opening round, Stoltzfus began finding success with his boxing and pressure. He eventually brought the fight to the ground and took advantage of an opening as Abdul-Malik attempted to work back to his feet.
Stoltzfus locked in a rear-naked choke in the second round, forcing the submission and handing Abdul-Malik another difficult setback.
For Stoltzfus, it was a career-defining performance. For Abdul-Malik, it was a reminder that raw athleticism and finishing ability aren’t enough against an experienced UFC veteran who can survive the early storm and capitalize on mistakes.
Ribovics ends Barboza’s career
The most emotional moment of UFC 330 came before the main event.
Edson Barboza, one of the most recognizable strikers of his generation, faced Esteban Ribovics in what turned out to be the final fight of his career.
Barboza’s legacy was already secure. His career included some of the most spectacular kicks in UFC history, including his famous spinning-wheel-kick knockout of Terry Etim. But at 40 years old and entering the fight on a difficult stretch, Barboza faced a younger and dangerous opponent in Ribovics.
Ribovics ultimately stopped Barboza early in the second round, bringing the fight to an end. Barboza subsequently announced his retirement, closing the book on a professional career that finished with a 24-15 record.
The result was difficult to watch for longtime fans, but Barboza left the Octagon with a legacy that goes far beyond his final record. Few fighters have produced as many memorable striking highlights during their UFC careers.
Turner needs just 39 seconds
If Barboza’s retirement provided the night’s emotional moment, Jalin Turner provided its fastest.
Turner wasted almost no time against Kauê Fernandes.
Fernandes opened aggressively, but Turner capitalized when his opponent missed a spinning attack. Turner countered with a devastating left hand before swarming with follow-up strikes and forcing the referee to stop the fight.
The official time was just 39 seconds.
The victory was especially significant for Turner, who returned to competition following a brief retirement. He immediately reminded the lightweight division why he has long been regarded as one of its most dangerous finishers.
A night of history, heartbreak and new possibilities
UFC 330 ultimately belonged to Islam Makhachev.
The champion faced one of the biggest and most technically challenging opponents of his welterweight reign, survived Garry’s best moments and walked away with a historic 17th consecutive UFC victory.
But the event was about more than the record.
Dern strengthened her position as the strawweight division’s leading champion. Stoltzfus delivered one of the night’s biggest upsets. Turner produced a lightning-fast knockout. And Barboza said goodbye to the sport after a career filled with spectacular violence and unforgettable moments.
For Makhachev, the next question is who can finally stop him. For everyone else at UFC 330, the challenge is figuring out how to keep up.
