Update On The Future Of This Chelsea Defender: Should Alonso Cut Him Loose?

In a recent report, talkSPORT offered an update on the future of Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong. It has been revealed that the Blues are willing to cash in on the English full-back amid interest from Coventry City this summer.

Acheampong’s Lack Of Game Time In The Premier League

Acheampong struggled to make himself a regular starter for the West London club but managed to put in a few solid performances for them in the Premier League. The 20-year-old scored two goals in 30 matches for Chelsea last season across all fronts.

The English talent is currently among the best young full-backs in the Premier League. Hence, it is no surprise that he is generating interest from Coventry City this off-season.

His current contract at Stamford Bridge will run out in the summer of 2029. Thus, Chelsea are in no immediate need to cash in on him this month.

Should Chelsea Boss Xabi Alonso Cut Acheampong Loose This Summer?

Acheampong is a good tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to make some crucial interceptions for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and is a strong runner with the ball.

The English sensation can even chip in by scoring the odd goal for his team going forward. Standing at 1.90, he can use his strong frame to win a few 50-50 aerial duels for his side as well. Acheampong is primarily a right-back but can also serve as a centre-back if told to do so. He has some experience in the Premier League but needs a change of scenery in search of more game time in the coming seasons.

At the moment, Acheampong is not guaranteed a regular place in Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso’s first team next season. Hence, it is only fair to the player if the Blues allow him to leave before the end of this summer transfer window.

At 20, Acheampong has the potential to be a future star in English football as long as he continues to improve with each year. Therefore, Alonso should focus on cutting him loose this off-season and using the money generated from his potential sale to strengthen other areas of his match-day squad this summer.
