SALEM, Va. (WFXR) -- The Virginia Cavaliers women's basketball program was in the spotlight Monday night at the Salem Civic Center for the monthly Roanoke Valley Sports Club meeting. UVA's new head women's basketball coach in Aaron Roussell was in the house as he spoke to club members in Salem. Coach Roussell was named Cavaliers head coach back in April after seven seasons leading the University of Richmond Spiders women's basketball program. Under Roussell the Spiders had a 148-72 record and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Richmond won the 2024 Atlantic-10 tournament and captured back-to-back outright regular-season A10 championships in 2024 and 2025. Overall Coach Roussell talks about coming to the Roanoke Valley to speak to the club as UVA coach. "First thought just a fantastic area for sports and I think for basketball as well. I think it was about 13 years ago came down when I was a University of Chicago. I was here for Jostin's award presentation for one of our players there and that was my first first chance to get down to this area so I've known about it ever since and you know you see the fan base of Virginia Tech for UVA and JMU even in this area so it's gonna be great representing the orange and blue down here," said Roussell. Virginia is Roussell's fourth stint as a collegiate head coach. Over the past 22 seasons, he has compiled a career record of 460-194. Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
