Often the referred to as the quarterbacks of a defense, having a good linebacker corps is typically the key to a team's defensive success or downfall. Whether it's plugging running lanes, maintaining their job as a quarterback spy or breaking up a pass play in coverage, the job of a linebacker never ending. To have one of the nation's top at the position leading your team could be the difference in a state title run. Thankfully for a select few teams in the country, they have a prospect in the position that is considered to be not only the best in their state, but among the best on a national scale. Here are the top 15 linebackers in the country heading into the 2026 high school football season. 1. Omarii Sanders High School: Franklin Road Academy (Nashville, TN) Class: 2027 College Commitment: Vanderbilt Breakdown: A two-way standout, Sanders led FRA with 58 receptions for 1,064 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior. He also led the defense, totaling 73 tackles and a pair of interceptions.
2. Kaden Henderson High School: Tampa Jesuit (FL) Class: 2027 College Commitment: Texas A&M Breakdown: The Aggies landed a true gamechanger in Henderson when he announced his commitment to the program on June 18. He's coming off of a junior season that saw him rack up 49 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and nine sacks.
3. Isaac McNeil High School: Vigor (Mobile, AL) Class: 2027 College Commitment: Auburn Breakdown: It could be argued that McNeil is the top player in Alabama and not many would disagree. He backs up that claim after recording 92 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and nine sacks as a junior. 4. Cooper Witten High School: Liberty Christian (Argyle, TX) Class: 2027 College Commitment: Oklahoma Breakdown: The son of Dallas Cowboys legend Jason Witten, Cooper's junior season consisted of only seven games, but he shined in all seven, totaling 87 tackles, nine tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. 5. Roman Igwebuike High School: Mount Carmel (Chicago, IL) Class: 2027 College Commitment: Notre Dame Breakdown: Playing for the top team in Illinois, Igwebuike played a key role in the Caravan's stout defense last year. He finished the season with 82 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and four sacks in their unbeaten run. 6. Nehemiah McCary High School: Maplesville (AL) Class: 2028 College Commitment: Uncommitted Breakdown: McCary is a force no matter what side of the ball he's on. While being one of the state of Alabama's top rushers last year, he also accounted 39 total tackles, four tackles for loss and a pair of sacks on defense.
7. Brayton Feister High School: Massillon Washington (OH) Class: 2027 College Commitment: Uncommitted Breakdown: Another two-way star, Feister and his younger brother transferred to Washington from Archbishop Hoban for the 2026 season. At Hoban he recorded 133 tackles, 39 tackles for loss and 13 sacks on defense while rushing for 1,098 yards and 17 touchdowns on offense.
8. Tahj Gray High School: St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, NJ) Class: 2028 College Commitment: Uncommitted Breakdown: 102 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss (TFL), and 4 sacks
9. Aronson Randle Jr. High School: Garner (NC) Class: 2027 College Commitment: Miami Breakdown: A key piece in Miami's 2027 class, Randle Jr. figures to be a major factor in the Hurricanes' long-term plans. He was one of the best linebackers in North Carolina last year, totaling 84 tackles, three forced fumbles and an interception 10. Prince Goldsby High School: Blue Springs South (MO) Class: 2027 College Commitment: Ohio State Breakdown: On a Jaguars team with massive expectations this year, Goldsby will lead their defense. He is coming off of a 2025 in which he recorded 83 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks. 11. Sean Fox High School: Warren Central (Indianapolis, IN) Class: 2027 College Commitment: Kentucky Breakdown: Playing for one of the traditional powerhouse programs in the Hoosier State, Fox leads a Warriors defense with high expectations in 2026. There's a reason for those expectations as he is coming off of a junior year where he racked up 91 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.
12. Quinton Cypher High School: Millbrook (Raleigh, NC) Class: 2027 College Commitment: Ohio State Breakdown: Another Buckeye pledge, Cypher was one of the most efficient linebackers in the country last season, recording 133 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and four sacks. 13. Taven Epps High School: Tustin (CA) Class: 2027 College Commitment: Oklahoma Breakdown: The second Sooners pledge on this list, Brent Venables went to the west coast to land a commitment from Epps. It's a big commitment as well as Epps recorded 72 tackles, 13 quarterback hurries, 12 tackles for loss and three sacks as a junior. 14. Jhadyn Nelson High School: Langham Creek (Houston, TX) Class: 2027 College Commitment: Texas Tech Breakdown: Nelson figures to play a prominent role in Texas Tech's future defensive plans. As a junior, he recorded 59 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and three sacks. 15. Toa Satele High School: Mililani (HI) Class: 2027 College Commitment: Oregon Breakdown: One of the standout pledges in Oregon's 2027 class, Satele is a force.
