Venus Williams receiving a main-draw wild card at the Cincinnati Open has sparked a debate. At 46, the seven-time Grand Slam champion remains an unquestioned icon of the sport, but after her 14th consecutive loss, fans on social media began questioning whether tournament directors should continue to hand out main-draw entries to aging legends over younger players. And veteran sports journalist Jon Wertheim stepped in to defend the tournament’s decision to include Williams.

Jon Wertheim Defends Venus Williams Amid Wild Card Debate

Across social media, fans argued that wild cards should go to players trying to build their careers. Some questioned why Williams continues to receive wild cards despite her recent losing streak and declining competitiveness, while others sarcastically suggested that tournament organizers could give wild cards to retired legends simply to boost ticket sales.

Responding directly to the criticism, Wertheim offered a broader perspective on the controversy.

First addressing the typo in the fan’s tweet, Wertheim wrote:

“No Venue should get a wild card. Tournament sites must be permanent… as for Venus, agree it’s jarring to see such an esteemed, prideful player lose like this. But WCs are so problematic, if a champion wants to play on and events want to reward past > present/future, let them both. I struggle to get too worked up here….”

In another repost, Wertheim pointed to the behind-the-scenes realities of Wild Card decisions, noting that the system has long been influenced by politics and business interests.

“Players’ friends and girlfriends and siblings have gotten wild cards. Management agencies promise them to players as inducements to sign. If we want to put rules guardrails on a corrupt system that flies in the face of merit, great. But why pick on Venus as the bridge too far?,” Wertheim wrote.

In the first round in Cincinnati, Colombia’s Emilia Arango handed Williams her 14th consecutive loss, defeating her 6-2, 6-2. Williams’ last singles victory was against Peyton Stearns at the 2025 DC Open. The former World No. 1 is now ranked outside of 600.

However, the doubles tournament is set to start on Sunday, when Venus will reunite with her sister, Serena Williams, to face the duo of Marta Kostyuk and Stearns.
